It was ok. The grottoes were amazing. Take a taxi there and back. It's worth the convenience. Would I go back again? No. Am I glad I went? Yes The ancient town is not that great. But walking on the wall is an amazing experience.

The Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple are both “must see” places that will leave a visitor wonderstruck! Do not miss! The Datong City Wall is also an amazing structure that one should definitely walk on to see the architecture, know the history of the city and to take in the city views from atop it. The walled city is beautiful at every corner, roundabout and every street. Stay in a hotel in the walled city.

Super town with wonderful sigths such as the Grottoes, the Hanging Temples and Huayuan temple. Also the rebuilt city walls are well worth a visit. Make sure to bring a translator app. as very little English is spoken. Food good and people friendly.

    It's the authentic Chinese experience.

It's the authentic Chinese experience. Datong people are not used to foreigners, some of them literally freaked out just by seeing me. When they realised I could speak Chinese they went from lovely to adorable. The grottoes and the hanging temple are simply amazing, I recommend also the wooden pagoda. The temples in the city center, the 7 dragon wall and the city wall were also great. I would suggest a 2 full days stay at least.

We went to Datong as an overnight trip from Beijing specifically to visit the Yungang Caves. We arrived late afternoon and went to have dinner in the Old Town which has been partially restored and it is very beautiful to walk in the evening when lots of buildings are lit up. The highlight of our visit were the caves, which I cannot stress it enough, were AMAZING!!! Well worth the six-hour train trip and back from Beijing. We did not go to any other attraction but the caves themselves are more than worth the trip.

Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery outside of Datong are must see sights. If you have time, Hengshan and Wutaishan are both beautiful mountains with monasteries. I travelled in China for three months and Datong was one of my favorite towns.

I love the traditional design of the hotel, the cosiness and cleanliness of the hotel room, plus the room facilities that came with the unexpected water container that functions as a water filter as well. Most of all, I appreciate the excellent service of the Front Desk, who were more than willing to assist us with the booking of a taxi for our Yungang Grottoes & Hanging Temple day trip hassle free, and reached out to us when they found a pair of dark glasses in one of our rooms after we left (which as it turned out, were not ours).

I fell in love with this hotel. It has a gentle, old-world charm that makes you feel like you're in a classic movie. The bedrooms are exquisitely furnished, the courtyards are beautiful and despite the attractions of Datong I spent hours just sitting in the courtyards enjoying the atmosphere. The location is perfectly central in this interesting city where there's much to see. The breakfast is without doubt the most eclectic I've ever been served, but there was much to enjoy. So many small welcoming touches. I was so sad to leave!

Historical Yan Hua Temple & popular eateries of Datong are all within walking distance from the hotel. It located within walking street, You need to get driver to stop at 严华饭店&walk to the barrier to reach here. Here I must really say a big thank you for the staff who we met during checkout. She has went extra miles to assist my husband to search for his lost wallet and promptly follow up.

The hotel is situated right in the ancient city part of Datong. It is a beautiful hotel with great facilities. The staff can speak English and helped us organize a trip to the Hanging Temple and the Grottoes. They were extremely helpful. The hotel exceeded our expectations and if we come back to Datong, we will definitely repeat. The breakfast was excellent!

The hotel is right in the center, but it's quiet. We had a huge bed for 3 people, enough room for everybody. The staff didn't speak any english, but used online translator and had prepared a proposal for tour for the next day with all needed info in english so it was easy and fast to decide what to do

Beautiful hotel, very friendly and helpful staff. Huayuan Temple is only 5min walk from the hotel and the Yungang grottoes a 30min drive. The Dao Xiaomian (typical noodles from Datong) restaurant just around the hotel corner suggested by the hotel staff was really good, a must try!

I liked the breakfast because they kept it simple and there was an ample supply of coffee. I also thought the location of the hotel was convenient to nearby attractions and the room itself was pleasantly rustic or Scandinavian in detail.
