Koyasan
Situated in Koyasan in the Wakayama region, 宿坊 光明院 features accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to a hot tub. It is located 39 km from Tama Museum and provides luggage storage space. Itakiso Shrine is 45 km away and Jodo-ji Temple is 45 km from the ryokan. Dinner had so many vegan dishes and they were delicious. Breakfast was smaller but still filling. It won't be a western breakfast. The futon ended up being comfy and warm but the halls were cold in the morning. I suggest arriving at the start of check in to take full advantage of everything there is (enjoying the pond, onsen, tea in room while reading the info on ceremonies). Location was great for the big 3 sites, if you don't mind walk 20 minutes in either direction.

Absolutely incredible experience that I highly recommend. The monks were so accommodating despite this not being a hotel, but rather an active temple. They speak English very well. The rooms are so beautiful, as is the temple. the bathrooms are modern and the bathing area is lovely. Do keep in mind the baths are only open at night from 4-9pm! you cannot use them in the morning.
I saw a review saying that the heating wasn't adequate but that was not the case when I went. they had normal room heaters that kept the room nice and warm despite the rest of the temple being cold (it's February) so bring warm clothing for sure!
I unfortunately missed the fire festival because I didn't know about it before checkin (pm) and I left before the afternoon the next day. the ceremony is at 1pm daily. I'll be sure to go next time.
They offer you dinner and breakfast in private rooms and it was so delicious and so filling. Especially because it's all vegetarian I was so happy.

Note that for the rooms with the shared bathroom there is a curfew for when the shower/bath can be used (4pm-9pm). The morning prayer was also a nice extra to participate in.

Large tatami room overlooking the river. Welcome onsen after two days on the Kumamo Kodo. The staff were excellent and went out of their way to look after my companion who had twisted his ankle.
Rooms were spacious, clean and futons were comfortable. Both the buffet breakfast and dinner were pretty good as well with a decent variety and rotation of the dishes over the 2N that we stayed. However the outside onsen that was right next to the river with a wide open view of a mountain forest oppsite the hotel was the highlight, cover ups were provided for the mixed gender outdoor onsen, so me and my partner could enjoy an onsen together for the first time!
the hotel is in a beautiful location and we had an amazing view from the window. the on-site onsen (hot spring spa) was great and not busy.
The meals were amazing - beautifully prepared and presented. So much thought went into them and they were delivered by a lovely Japanese host. The beds were on tatami mats with hard pillows .....something that you expect in a Japanese Ryokan.
Unique experience of lodging in a beautiful buddhist temple. The place has a very special atmosphere. The (buddhist vegetarian) dinner and breakfast were rich and very tasty. The staff was super welcoming and friendly. Good onsen bath. Traditional Japanese-style room (tatami mats and futon beds) was really spatious and comfortable.
A good hostel, in a good location (though Yunomine onsen is not that big). It had a nice tatami common area that even had a few games provided, such as go. The hostel had its own private hot springs, that are free to use: a lovely outdoor bath, a relatively big indoor bath and a rather small indoor bath. We had booked a private room, not big but fine with three persons. We received bento boxes for dinner and you could grab rice for free. There was also free rice porridge for breakfast. Overall very good value for the price.
I had a great time in Nagisaya Hotel. The room is in traditionnel japanese style (tatami and futon on floor) and had a wonderful view on the sea. The hotel offers interior and exterior onsen where I had my best time with the view on the moutain and a little on the sea (only men onsen has total view on the sea, women are on the other side). The staff is really friendly.
Dinner and breakfast was superb. Loved the old style room with the tatami mats, futon , river view/sounds and japanese style table and chairs. Tattoo friendly onsen in this place and bonus onsen by the river. Staff friendly, helpful and informative. Wi fi reception excellent!
Very nice owner. Good location close to the bus stop. Genuine Japanese experience of staying in Ryokan, among others with sleeping on the tatami. Digging own onsen at a river side is amazing. Food needs to ordered earlier than on arrival.
