Stunning, authentic and clean room(s), kind and understanding staff who spoke to me slowly in Japanese to assist with checkin, and rules were reiterated in English on documents anyway despite Matsue being relatively rural. Absolutely beautiful view at both night and in the morning, I was shocked! Onsen came free with the stay. Zero complaints, the best stay of our trip around Japan.

The breakfast was amazing and the location is very good. Very close to the bus stop which we had to take because JR operations were suspended due to heavy rain. Value was so good.

This was a luxurious treat and we all enjoyed it from the welcome by the general manager, the hot spring bath, the food, the room. One of our group had a massage which was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast was an amazing buffet of Japanese and Western dishes. The hotel provided transport by shuttle bus to and from the hotel. Communications via booking.com worked well.
Matsue
All accommodations have a tatami (woven-straw) floor and Japanese futon bedding. Amenities include air conditioning and an LCD TV, while some rooms have a fridge and an attached bathroom. Yukata robes are provided. The staff are incredibly kind and accommodating. The accommodation itself was absolutely beautiful; because I am traveling with my pet, I was in the Annex, which exceeded my wildest dreams in terms of comfort and privacy. The town is a small seaside area in a quiet bay, with a gorgeous Shinto temple and absolutely beautiful historic area. I can't wait to come back once I'm better at Japanese, I suspect there's much more to be discovered in this area! Oooh, and oh my god, the food! I went for the half board, and was absolutely blown away by the variety, quality, and presentation of my meals. I am so grateful for my time here.

Really wonderful staff who were very helpful at all times. The rooms were clean and we had a lovely view over the lake/river. The onsen/bath house was great.
It was amazing with tatami mats in the hotel and not only in rooms. It felt good walking on them in the lobby and everywhere else. We liked very much onsen as well. I was there every evening during our stay.
Kitchen is nice with complimentary coffee and tea. Everything else was to my satisfaction. Futon beds over tatami are harder than a mattress but of course it's what was advertised so I'm ok with it.
This hotel is just stunning. Japanese-style, with tatami floors and a great onsen, sublime breakfast, perfect amenities and extras such as manga library, it is worth a visit in itself.
A great way to experience tatami mat bedroom. Everything was great except for the lack ventilation toilet. The house was tip top clean. Owner was friendly. Very near to the station and almost everything is a walk away. The futon was comfy. Room was warm with heater. Very peaceful area too.
Very, very, very beautiful ryokan. The owner already greeted us at the entrance and was extremely friendly. The room was also beautiful and made you feel like living in Edo period Japan. The onsen was very relaxing, and after it, my partner was offered to wear a nice yukata for dinner. The food was extraordinary (although it could mostly not be adjusted for my admittedly picky partner, see below), both in terms of taste and in the way it was presented. I would definitely recommend this ryokan anytime to any traveller.
Great location, the staff is extremely kind and welcoming, the room (double + tatami area) is comfortable. The onsen is small, but very pleasant
Hoshi Ryokan was a warmly welcomed few days …my good fortune was to coincide with Tsuwano’s traditional music and dance festival….the ryokan was positively helpful..I felt looked out for as have only a few phrases in Japanese…delicious food beautifully presented with a range of local sakes…tatami mats and futon in a gorgeous room..
The breakfast was definitely worth paying extra for, and the rooftop onsen was fantastic. They also had a very nice sauna that kept a stable 92 degrees celsius and a cold water bath that I really appreciated. Upon entering the hotel, all guests had to remove their shoes, and walking around barefoot or wearing only socks felt really nice on the tatami mats covering the floor around the entire hotel.
