Kusatsu Onsen Eidaya is located in Kusatsu. The property is a 10-minute walk from Kusatsu Yubatake and Kusatsu-Onsen Bus Terminal. It is a Japanese style inn with retro vibes. Their private onsen's water comes from the very hot spring source of Kusatsu and therefore you can experience the hot spring water without going to the public baths if you are shy. We mostly used them at night when the town's baths are closed since the inn's are 24/7 open. I would recommend to book a japanese style room as it has it's tatami and according decoration and together with the inn's yukata (there is an opt for a colorful one and geta to rent) it gives a more japanese experience. We liked that the inn had slippers for going outside which was convenient as the whole town is full with onsens (even ones that are only for feet) and therefore is more convenient to move in slippers. They have a game area with a lot of retro game (even arcade games) and Nintendo SFC System Video Game Console in the rooms. It may not be in the centre of the town (around 10 min walk for either yubatake or Sainokawara Park and open onsen) but is very close to it and also they offer pick up/drop off from the bus terminal. Staff were very friendly and helped with everything we needed. In our next visit to Kusatsu we are definitely staying there!

Located in Kusatsu in the Gunma region, Oyado Yukizumi provides accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to a hot spring bath. I love the variety of food on my plate when i got my breakfast and it was brought to my room on time that I requested them in. Having the Coffee maker in my room made it easier to get my caffeine fix, not that LAWSON (convenience store) was far when it was literally just downstairs, that couldn't have been closer. And that Bus terminal just outside the Hotel? right on the spot where i need it to be. And did I mention they have in-house HOT SPRING? Yeah they do!!! Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of going to the area.

Set in Takasaki, 28 km from Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park, Ryutakuzenji 宿坊 offers accommodation with free bikes, free private parking, a garden and a bar. Excellent room with comfortable blankets which were perfect for the winter cold. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout, giving great advice regarding transport and offering a shuttle service for 1500 yen per person for both ways. The location is a little out the way, but you'll probably be staying here for the tranquility rather than what it offers nearby. In terms of the food, both the dinner and breakfast were great. The dinner offered sukiraki beef with tofu and vegetable tempura. There was plenty to eat and enough for a big eater like myself to feel full. Breakfast was similarly well made with enough to feel like lunch should be a bit later then usual. There was also complimentary snacks, tea, coffee as well as a small setup with a mini PS1 and famicom. We didn't end up using that, but it was nice that it was there. The area around is quiet, with a bit more time I think the rental bikes would have allowed us to go further afield but its winter and it's cold. We walked about around the area, had some really nice views of takasaki especially in the evening as the lights of the city come on. Beds provided were exceptional. The duvet cover was smooth on the skin and the duvet was extremely fluffy. Perfect for winter. Bathroom was clean, well maintained with good water temperature and excellent water pressure. Oh, and the koi in the pond were spectacular.

Great view from reserved room. Clean and quiet. Seperate female shared onsen. Just a few staff who can speak english but they all are ful of service mind. The Hotel is far from the citi but you can request hotel's sutter bus to pick you up from JR Minakami station.

Set 36 km from Ishidan-gai Steps, Sekizenkan Kashotei Sanso offers 4-star accommodation in Nakanojo and has an open-air bath. LITERALLY THE BEST EXPERIENCE IN JAPAN. I am a Japanese American and have been to Japan several times and have stayed at different ryokans but this exceeded my expectations. First of all, the beauty of this hotel from the moment you walk in. I literally gasped when I walked in front of the ryokan. It is so breathtaking and you can see and feel the history of this ryokan. The lobby is on the 5th floor so when you first go, it's very confusing but after your first try you can basically navigate the ryokan very easily. The hotel staff were extremely professional and very friendly. They welcome you with hot tea and a cake and explain everything in detail. You are then escorted by a staff member to your room to explain everything. I got the bigger room and OMG the room was amazing. It was worth every penny! The private onsen with the beautiful balcony! We had a fully stocked complimentary fridge along with tea and coffee. There was a kotatsu in my room, a full living room, and two beds with the most fluffy comforter ever. We also received a Kaiseki style breakfast and dinner and the service was amazing there as well. The dinner was an 11 course dinner and it was amazing! I would have stayed there for a week if it wasn't for the price. I highly recommend!

Located along Houshi River, Houshi Onsen Chojukan features a public hot spring bath, Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and Japanese cuisine. This place is just on the top of my ranking. A real Japanese experience with all the necessary detail to make the stay unforgettable. The different baths super clean and with history. The meals offered were delightful. And the environment just as needed, calm, serene and peaceful.

Oyado Tamaki offers indoor/outdoor hot-spring baths and a traditional garden with benches where guests can sit and relax in. The property is near public transportation, which is a big plus for a solo traveller without a car. I took a room with a private onsen, which was really enjoyable. The dinner and breakfast were all excellent. The staff were very nice and accommodating. I really felt warm-hearted when they tried to explain the dinner menu in english and did a handwritten english translation of the breakfast menu. They also offered to drop me off at the bus station and reminded me when to expect the bus. It was incredibly sweet. I do love the area as it was a good break from the city’s hustle and bustle. The Ikaho footsteps is about a 5-minute walk. It has a lot of shops so it is a good distraction while climbing the stairs.

Boasting an open-air bath and views of garden, Yamakikan is a ryokan set in a historic building in Naganohara, 48 km from Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park. Service was impeccable, beautiful location, quiet. Perfect!
