Katowice, Częstochowa and Gliwice are popular with other travellers visiting Silesia.
Katowice is good city for people who like partying, clubs. Great Silesian food. And places call Pączkarnia. You can get really tasty doughnuts.
This is a town that is slowly developing but isn't a tourist location - a hub for shared service centres means that you can get away with the language barrier in most shops and restaurants as they'll speak English or German. This is not a bad location to setup to visit Auschwitz but not as pretty by far as Krakow. More for business than pleasure. Best restaurant is definitely Tatiana (somewhere locals would love to go but a little pricy for most local residents). All food is excellently prepared and is actually amazing value for a westerner. Three courses plus drinks for 25-30 (that is a lot in Katowice). Also for bars go to Mariacska(?) street which is great in the summer as lively and lots of outside seating. Tip for tourists. Be patient and don't cross the roads on a red man - a ticket/fine will await you! There is a large shopping mall called Silesia Center which is a short tram ride away but it is hard to get a ticket on the way back as no machines at the Center. A taxi there though is just a few pounds so you are better off grabbing one of those. Be warned though - most of the drivers in Poland drive like maniacs and you soon work out that there is substance to the rating as one of Europe's worst for road accidents. Most places offer contactless payment so you won't need much cash at all. Tipping is the main use plus some taxis only take cash. Uber operate in Katowice too so you won't have any issues there if you choose that option. Better in Kato in the summer as can reach temps of 30+ celsius but in the winter can easily get to -20 celsius and you'd better pack warm!!! For accommodation I'd highly recommend the Monopol for comfort and facilities and location, but also the Angelo hotel is up there too. Overall, you'll be comfortable enough on a business trip but there is not enough for you to visit as a tourist.
Beautiful and charming Silesian city. Plenty of restaurants and places worth visiting. Places recommended to eat are the restaurant in Opera hotel, ranked 7th in all Silesia, Wisniowy Sad with great 'pierogi' and historical Sedlaczek.
1) St. Joseph's church - a unique example of a church designed by Dominik Boehm in 1930s in the style evocative of both traditional industrial style of Silesia and of residential districts designed for miners. Very controversial in its time. Austere and gloomy interior and a symbolic courtyard with 12 arches (one for each of the apostles). Do not miss spotting marks left by WWII shells on the walls. 2) Guido coal mine - the main tourist attraction, go down 320 meters to experience the reality of work in the coal mine. Unique in Europe, take a ride in a cable train and enjoy Silesian fare and great beer in a bar 320 meters underground. That's nearly the height of the Eiffel Tower upside down! 3) Bajtel Gruba (coal mining experience for kids and toddlers) - great time guaranteed. Kids gonna love the industrial type of fun. And there's a mini military your kids museum just next door (Sienkiewicza street). You won't be able to drag your children away from it.
Katowice is a modern city with an industrial past. There are many post war office buildings with a giant sunny market square in the center complete with palm trees in the summer. There are some older parts of the city where most of the streets are lined with bars and cafes. The streets are filled with outdoor terraces in the summer. Katowice is a great place for shopping with 2 major shopping malls in the city center and a gigantic mall called Silesia City located a short tram ride from the main market square.
Katowice is an interesting postindustrial center close to Auschwitz and Krakow. Silesian museum is a great place where to learn local and Polish history. I really recommend to visit it. I love Polish food in general. There are many good restaurant in Katowice, and my favorite is Patio where it's possible to eat really good traditional dishes.
I was pleasantly surprised by the prosperous and quite historic feel of parts of the centre of Katowice, which has a reputation mainly as an industrial centre. There are many fine 19th and early 20th century commercial buildings of architectural interest, some recently restored to a high standard and others no doubt soon to be upgraded. The area south of the rail tracks has a fascinating group of modernist commercial, residential and administrative modernist blocks and villas of the inter war period, of which the city is rightly proud and can be inspected using the tourist map. The city promotes a green agenda, which is creating pleasant places to stroll or cycle away from traffic. Public transport is excellent (trams and buses), and I learned that over-70s go free. The chief attraction is the extensive culture park, which is actually situated in Chorzow, a short tram ride away, and includes an outstanding skansen of relocated Silesian rural buildings in a delightful setting, and also a zoo and fun fare. There are some excellent bars in the city centre, some serving characteristic polish food, all in a very friendly atmosphere.
Came for Womex music festival and to meet up with a friend. Visited the Silesian museum which was good but there is not a lot to see and do in Katowice during the day. The Golden Donkey vegetarian restaurant is a good place for cheap, healthy and delicious food!
Katowice is a beautifully City with many shops and the industrial centre of Silesia. There's always people awake and they're all friendly. However, things to do are limited.
Great city to view the Silesia. The public transport was good enough to get us in every city and town we wanted to visit. Spodek is amazing. We recommend restaurant Bistro Bzik. Good quality delicious food.
Wonderful place. The apartment was very clean. Sex Apartment BDSM is located in the heart of Częstochowa, 50 meters from the main square. The equipment is great, especially the furniture in the apartment, it gives the feeling of having a good time. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something more than just accommodation. Parking next to the building, alcohol shop downstairs. Dinner was a nice idea - pizza in the shape of the heart. I recommend. We were passing through Częstochowa to Silesia, but we will use it again :)
The greatest place in South Poland / Silesia. We have been there several times before and the place and the people are the most kind and friendly - you definitely feel yourself like at home but in a beautiful manor. The surrounding forest is full of wild life - birds and animals. The mountain air and the silence. The restaurant offers delicious food both for dinners and breakfast. When we have a possibility to visit South Poland, this place is a must be for at least one night accommodation.
We loved our stay because the apartment was so nice and cute, every furniture was from IKEA so it was great comfort in beds and the couch too. Also very clean! So close to the Humanities faculty of Silesian Uni, like literally you cross the street and you are there!! We came for a small study project there and it was amazing to live so close şn the center. Also it should be known that the room with the baby head next to the living room has no door.
Location near the highway so easily to drive a car to any Silesian city. Delicious breakfast and any dishes served by cooks. I recommend to try. Comfortable room, clean and very nice although have some small things to repairt, cause is not so new, but is not disturbing during stay. Great place to rest after work. Sauna available. Beautiful garden outside. Hotel staff usually willing to help.
Gliwice
Nice old building with high ceilings and elegant details. Apartment is enormous! Tastefully furnished. Bathroom is brand new (however not "inside" your apartment). Kitchen is big as well and has some basic equipment. The balcony overlooks the inner courtyard, characteristic for silesian architecture. During the weekend it was very easy to find a parking space.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this apartment. The modern and well-designed interior, along with the well-equipped kitchen, made for a comfortable experience. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, and the proximity to Silesia Park was a definite plus. Additionally, the reliable internet access added to the overall satisfaction of my stay. Highly recommended!
Tarnowskie Góry
Apartment very clean, tidy, bright, warm and comfortable. Location just 5 minutes walk from city centre. Very well equipped to stay for a few days with family or friends. Very family friendly. Plenty of parking space for a car outside. Very peaceful and quiet area. Great bathroom. It's great for a base for a trip around Upper Silesia.
The buffet breakfast was excellent. Mostly meat and cheese. The place is conveniently located: inside a park, very close to the ethnographic museum and to the Silesia Stadium. Katowice is a few minutes away by tram. Staff were very helpful. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Skaut Hotel, and I recommend it.
Hotel had a real buzz and we enjoyed the swimming pool area and jacuzzi. Excellent restaurant with outstanding dinner menu and one of the best breakfast choices we have ever seen. We loved the smoothie maker. Well located hotel with easy walk to town centre and silesian museum.
Katowice
Great Apartment for either long or short stay. Bright, clean and spacious. Close to a free parking area, close to Public transport, nearby a Silesia Shopping Centre, with endless shops, Cinema, restaurants and Supermarket. Also walkable to the center, 15-20mins max!
Staffs are so nice. The hotel is located right in front of the Silesian Theatre, in the middle of Rynek street. Getting anywhere in the city is relatively easy, and the main train station is located just 5 minutes away by walking.
Pszczyna
We liked everything, small but indeed super nice apartment in the heart of the pearl of Silesia! Communication with the host was super easy and we enjoyed a lot a cozy terrase.
Cosy hotel with an interesting historical silesian mining interieur. You have even a gym there. It takes just 5 min walk to reach the airport.
Nice rooms and just off the motorway, very convenient staging point for anywhere across Katowice and elsewhere around Silesia.
The suite was much larger than we expected, the breakfast was much richer than the photo indicated. The pool, sauna, ping-pong, air-hockey, etc. were great. We ordered dinner from the menu in the hotel restaurant and it was always excellent. The views from the balconies were perfect too.
Friendly employees with smile and happy to help. Super location also! Food is great and diverse. Swimming pool ans Spa are excellent!
I had a short but very wonderful stay, with walks and spa and good and well presented food. the receptionist was very attentive from we walked in. I apriciated it highly and would highly recomendate the place.
Breakfast was delicious, eggs omelet was perfectly made ,even if you are vegan, you can have something for yourself to eat
We had the entire hotel to ourselves as we visited during the off season in the middle of the week. However, the staff was absolutely lovely and treated us as if the hotel were full. The rooms are bright and new with comfortable beds and very clean. Definitely would recommend staying here if you are doing the Trail of the Eagles Nest as its stunning to wake up to views of the castle. We also had the castle to ourselves in the morning when we took a tour.
