The Elopura Hotel located on the East Coast of Sabah which also known as “Land below the Wind”. Elopura name itself was the first name of Sandakan when it was found by William B Pryer back in 1879.
Perched on top of a hill, this resort is surrounded by the tropical rainforests of Borneo.

Room was comfortable and spacious with a balcony and all the usual amenities. The pool was great, we liked the bar area and the grand ballroom was the ideal location for a large function

Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm.
Sandakan is not a city brimming with character and charm. It is OK and you can find a small number of nice enough places to eat and drink, if you set your mind to it. I would not want to have stayed there more than one day and I won’t be going back anytime soon.

We used Sandakan as the gateway to Turtle Island and the Kinabatangan River. We had lunch in a central hotel which was fine, not a lot for vegetarians but the service was good.
We could have spent a little longer there, it seems easy to get around.

Great little town, wouldn’t spend more than a day or two here unless you were using as a base to go and see the orangutans and rainforest discovery centre or island tours.
Great water front dinners. Shopping mall and grocery store close to water front. Nice vibe.

It’s my home town and I have lots of fond memories. Fresh seafood paradise and amazing mixed cuisine with traditional Chinese, Malaysian food and Indian dishes. Everything in the food market is super cheap and fresh.
The town centre is looking undeveloped and unloved.

Not much to do in the town or much to see and nowhere very nice places to eat/drink. Unfortunately it is quite run down so book a decent hotel to stay in and make the most of the experiences available in the area.

Beautiful place. Lots of nature.
Beautiful place. Lots of nature.
We visited the Borneo Sunbear conservation centre, The orang utan sanctuary, the Rainfoest Discovery Centre and the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Centre.
All above were very interesting and nicely done. However, you do need a car to get about as distances are far from Sabah Hotel.
Ride-sharing app (Grabcar) is a good alternative.
Seafood is cheap, plentiful and yummy in the Chinese restaurants
I had an early flight to Sandakan and headed straight to the hotel. I've requested for an early check-in (between 9am-10am). The hotel was very accommodating to allow an early check-in so I can refresh myself before going for my appointment.
I don't usually take breakfast because all I need to start my day is a cup of hot coffee. Glad to see that there's a coffee & tea facility at the lounge so I can have my coffee the way I like it, even if it's instant coffee.
The location is incredible. Only 20 min from Sandakan and less than 5 minutes walking from the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary as well as the Sun Bear sanctuary.
The staff is incredibly kind and the food is excellent.
The hotel is located in a beautiful natural environment, surrounded by a lake. The pictures don't do it justice.
To get to fall asleep listening to the frogs, the crickets and nature was a true gift!
The staff was/is extremely friendly and helpful as someone already mentioned 12 out of 10 in the ranking.
Bobot our guide needs a special mentioning, very knowledgeable about the animals, and a fun person to be with.
The driver to got us to the Lodge SAHA, already explained a lot about Sabah and the Lodge, very helpful.
It should be mentioned, you are in a Lodge in the middle of nowhere, don't expect.a 5star Hotel
Hotel is very modern, rooms like new and whole place is spotless. Staff are brilliant, let us check about 6 hours early on 2 separate stays. They open the door for you. Tasty buffet breakfast with lots of choices included. Best hotel I've stayed in Malaysia. I'm surprised doesn't have a higher score/rating. Loads of eating places 5 mins walk away is a bonus. Pool also clean and great to cool off.
Booking.com service very bad. I’m badly disappointed with you. I’ve paid for the apartment and when we arrived at Sandakan, the receptionist told me that the unit is not available! I’ve travell all the way from Kota Kinabalu with my family, and we have to spend that night at nearby Petronas station because there is no hotel available to check in.
Everything!! The room cleanliness was tip top. Carpet was clean. Room was spacious enough. Air cond is cold enough. Shower is heated and there's a bath tub inside. Toilet was in minimalist concept and spacious. Necessary Toiletries was prepare by the hotel. Shampoo and soap smells nice. Overall it was an excellent stay there. Will come again
The hotel had a great view in the reception area as well as from the room. Each room was a separate cabin which had more privacy, we loved it.
The reception staff was very helpful. He sent us to a nice room with good views.
Room was pretty big for 2 people and was clean
We enjoyed our stay in there. Thank you!
Very good location. Right next to Sandakan Central Markets. Easy place for tours to pick you up from. Shopping centre right next door so easy to pick up anything that you need. Clean apartment. Great view over the water. Lovely staff with excellent communication. Standard breakfast.
Booked a single room for 1 night. Room was basic but adequate and reflected in the price.
Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Served it’s purpose as a stopover on the way to the rainforest.
Located just 2 mins from the centre and plenty of shops and food outlets.
The location was lovely, but not directly on the river - you can see squirrels in the trees, as well as monkeys and other forrest animals. At night you can see bats! Breakfast was served in a buffet style with fried rice, fried eggs, sausages and toast.
Hotel was near the airport, we needed to stay in an area near the airport and close to the Sepilok Sanctuary, it was perfect for a night and the restaurant across the street was also very nice and clean.
the location is very good and close to the shopping mall, it's easy to find a place to eat and there are many restaurants nearby, but it's a little difficult to find a parking lot near the hotel..
A great stay at Sabah Hotel, the rooms are very comfortable and the staff provides an excellent service. We enjoyed the pool and there are many food options available.
Owner very nice, she contact guests thru WhatsApp how to check in before arrival. The hotel location was great, nearby a night market and lots of eateries.
