The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza swathed in vibrant pink blossom, you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in paradise. The stunning location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
However, it’s not its only glory. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the Greek Theatre is also a triumph. Its largely intact seating offers wonderful views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Spine-tingling summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars also offer live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, whose clock tower and church are overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the centre of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the south-west is the long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and north is the bay by Mazzaró.
As you would expect of Sicily’s most beautiful resort, there is no shortage of Taormina accommodation on Booking.com, including 5-star hotels on the beach, town centre apartments and luxury B&Bs.
Taormina is a good base-point for tours of Mt Etna.
Taormina is a good base-point for tours of Mt Etna. There are probably more tours running from Catania, but you can get a good tour from Taormina. The city itself is touristy, but clean and well organized. I won't throw the word "safe" out there, as we felt safe everywhere in Sicily, but we felt very comfortable in Taormina. Of course the sights and history don't compare to the bigger places in Sicily such as Siracusa, Palermo, or Agrigento, but that's not Taormina.

The city/village of Taormina was great for sightseeing.
The city/village of Taormina was great for sightseeing. We visited the ancient amphitheater, and enjoyed hiking in the area. There were an abundance of good shops and restaurants to visit. The City public park was a wonderful mix of trees and walking paths with some amazing “follies” - odd and artistic small buildings, built to entertain the eye.

The location of Taormina looking down to the coast is very beautiful. There was plenty to explore for a few days e.g. the Ancient Theatre, the beach at Isola Bella within walking distance or by cable car. For us the highlight was a visit to the hilltop village of Castelmola which provided fantastic views, including snow capped Mount Etna.
The main drawback of Taormina is the fact it is rather crowded even in late April when we visited. Also there are too many shops selling the same tourist tat.

The Taormina area is wonderful.
The Taormina area is wonderful. The mountains, the water, the history. Getting around needs a bit of planning. Taxi, bus or cablecar/lift unless you don´t mind to walk up and down hill. :-) I´ll be back.

Stunning Taormina, full of heartbreaking corners and history. Our enthusiasm had to face the reality of a pricy place. Disappointment in meeting insisting members of staff from the hospitality field, who sometimes looked desperately in need of customers for their restaurants, bars, boat trips. Etc..Parking is very expensive but we appreciated the free shuttle service to the city center.

Taormina has beautiful views with pretty venitian buildings,...
Taormina has beautiful views with pretty venitian buildings, very historical. The food is delicious, as it's a prime tourist location the price of dining out does reflect this. The service in restaurants is good, I found staff to be friendly. The bus station at Interbus terminal is in easy walking distance and it's a short bus ride to Giuardini Naxos beach which is sandy. Waiting times for buses can be long if you miss the bus. Cost of one way ticket for 3 people just under 6 euros. The cost of the journey on bus from Taormina to Catania airport is cheap, 21 Euros for 3 people. Cost of a taxi from the airport to Taormina is a bit expensive at 100 euros, but you can get the interbus which is a cheaper option but will take longer. Our journey by Taxi to Valentina B&B was around 1 hour and was arranged by the lovely lost Loredana at Valentina B&B. Our driver Giuseppe was polite , friendly and provided lots of tips about the location and places to eat etc. Try the paste marandela Sicilian cookies, almond flavour is delicious, also the Arancini, a good savoury snack filled with rice with different fillings. Try the tomato & veg one, delicious.Lucios restaurant was fantastic, staff friendly. And Di foesteria, opposite Valentina B&B where you can have breakfast or brunch, very good quality and nice staff.
From the wonderfully warm hosting of the staff and the chef to the lovely quiet garden setting, we absolutely loved our stay. We had such a lovely time and learned so much about the sicilian culture and food, we will be back no doubt! Grazie mille to our wonderful hosts! This is the hotel's claim "The Taormina Garden Hotel is a small family hotel where the Guest is a member of the family", that fits perfectly! Don't miss the restaurant and Angelo and Gianluca's cooking!
This hotel was exceptional, from our room, to the staff, the location, everything. It was a true 5 star experience without the four seasons or Belmont price tag. The breakfast in the morning was also VERY good and you could even order a cappuccino and other coffee drinks. The room was comfortable and our terrace had a cabana day bed and chairs. The staff also went above and beyond for anything and everything we needed. We will be back!!
The hotel is so homely! Decorated in the most beautiful artwork. It's also one of the cleanest places I've ever stayed. The location was perfect - an extremely short walk to the centre of Taormina. The views from the rooftop were amazing - I just wish I had more time to utilise it! The staff were so helpful - Luca especially was available to discuss and make suggestions to our group at any time via WhatsApp. It exceeded my expectation.
Great location virtually on the beach. Breakfast was unexpected but a treat on a terrace looking out to sea. We were put in a fairly awful room on railway side of hotel - but were moved for the first three nights to the sea side: a huge game-changing difference which we appreciated! Overall a nice hotel but with a few touches could be made better.
Taormina a nice doable 25 min walk up the hill
My sister and I had the best ever holiday. The hotel's location couldn't be better for a relaxed holiday. It's only 2 mins away on foot from the beautiful and historic Castelmola centre. The hotel also provides a shuttle service to/from Taormina 3 times a day, which was extremely convenient. All the staff were nice, especially all those at reception.
I highly recommend Hotel Villa Sonia.
We had 2 rooms and they were both really nice , but the second one with see view was excellent . I love staying at this hotel , despite that is in need of renovation and modernisation is still one of the best in Taormina, because of its location, its friendly staff and its super clean .
It's the first hotel that I recommend to all friends and family who want experience Sicily.
The location of the hotel is perfect and right in the centre of things in Taormina. The hotel has a authentic Sicilian charm with beautiful sea views from the balcony. But what made this place was the host and how helpful and advised us on excursions, restaurants and getting around. We would highly recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to visit Taormina.
The bed was very comfortable. The view of the sea was lovely. Alessio was very helpful and kind. As was Dario, who I didn't get to meet. Alessio met me from the airport and took me back too for 75Euros each way. It's very close to the centre of Taormina with shops and restaurants. It is a self contained apartment, not in a hotel complex.
The hotel was very clean and the staff friendly and accommodating. The valet parking (extra fee) was a definite plus as driving in Taormina is not for the faint of heart- let alone finding parking. All the comforts of a high end hotel. The breakfast had many choices to suit any preference. Easy walk to the main center.
Great hotel with great location in Taormina, 3 minute walk from the historical center, through the hotel garden. We had a large room with classic italyan style wood furniture and a terrace with view of the gulf/sea and mount Edna - the room was very clean and fully equiped. The staff is very kind and helpful.
Beautiful view from a tiny balcony. Close to two top attractions in Taormina, the community garden and the greek theater. A pretty reasonable price for Taormina. Great parking, right at the hotel for 20 euro a night but it feels like you violate the ZTL getting there but the owner assured me we did not.
What a great place to stay if you are visiting Taormina. We went to the concert of Andrea Bocelli and the Theater was on walking distance. The hotel has a great view at the sea. 5/10 min walk to the centre of Taormina. Breakfast and coffee was good.
Staff was really kind and helpfull.
The view from pool and breakfast area and the private beach were absolutely exceptional and amazing. This luxury stay is definitely a special stop when visiting Taormina. You don’t want to leave the hotel. Rooms are spacious and very comfortable.
Hotel is very comfortable with a good breakfast on the rooftop terrace. Wonderful views. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Location is short 5 minute walk to main area although on an incline on way back. Taormina was lovely.
Great value hotel located in beautiful Taormina. Fantastic views of Taormina, Mount Etna, and the lovely coastline of Giardini-Naxos from the breakfast dining area and from our private terrace. Beautiful gardens and views.
The hotel is very beautiful and offers great views of Taormina, the sea, mount Etna and the surrounding area.
Rooms are good and have nice balconies.
Breakfast is very good.
