I recently stayed at the Port Arthur Fox&Hound Historical Hotel and my experience was a mix of enchantment and disappointment.
Upon arrival, I was captivated by the hotel's romantic ambiance, but the sight of beer ads surrounding the property clashed with the desired atmosphere. Despite this initial setback, the room itself was cozy, featuring a double bed and an additional single bed, complemented by a breathtaking view of the water.
During my two-night stay, I noticed that room servicing wasn't provided daily, which might not suit everyone's preferences. Also the Water is mot drikable , so you need to ask for Water Bottles at the Reception. However, the location proved to be a true gem, offering easy access to the Port Arthur historic site, just a five-minute drive away.
While the food at the hotel's restaurant was average, the standout feature was undoubtedly the exceptional staff. Their warmth and professionalism added a special touch to my experience, making up for any culinary shortcomings.
Overall, the Hotel offers a picturesque setting and convenient proximity to local attractions, but improvements in maintenance and dining quality could elevate the experience to truly match its romantic allure.

The hosts were great, we were able to check in slightly earlier than the check-in time, the following morning Rod took us on a tour of the farm and the kids really enjoyed getting to pat and brush the highland cows and meeting the calfs. Thank you so much for your hospitality.

The location is superb for looking at all the spectacular sights around the Port Arthur region, short drives and a number of walks to look at coastal scenery. A walk along a track by the water to the Port Arthur historic site was an extra bonus.

The actual Convict area is simply amazing as are the free talks that occurred during the day. We were not fully prepared for the lack of outlets for food, lack of super market, restaurants etc. The one good out let offered a range of take away food but not good!

The historic site is magnificent and well managed. The general store is very disappointing, you should not rely on it if you are self catering
Gabriel's, the restaurant by the beach , was excellent I recommend it.
The restaurant at the Port Arthur motel featured poorly trained staff who seemed unaware of what service means. My girlfriend was served lukewarm seafood chowder with both the spoon and the garlic bread partially submerged. She asked for the chowder to be properly heated, this was seemingly done in a microwave. It was then returned with the same soggy bread.

Couldn't get into ghost tours or 1830 restaurant.. they were closed. Tried to get helicopter flight.. left message but never responded. Only 1 decent restaurant but the meals a bit light on considering price point and didn't seem to serve full meal. Loved the unzoo.

The Port Arthur area is beautiful, with glorious scenery and friendly people. The restoration of the Port Arthur Historical Site and the emphasis on truth versus “fairytale fantasy” does a great deal to enhance its appeal. It is not the miserable place that Australian historical literature has traditionally portrayed it as, but we discovered that it was, in fact, a combination of both progressive and regressive measures to reform prisoners. This is made clear by the information available. The staff are very responsive to visitors’ needs and questions, and literally go out of their way to help. Staff were always around everywhere on the grounds, and there was no shortage of help available. One example of this was when we were walking up towards the Soldier’s Memorial Avenue, and a chap driving a buggy asked if we wanted a lift. He then took us on a short, personalised tour of the entire grounds, answering the many questions we had and clarifying what we’d heard (thank you so much). Also, on our walking tour, I discovered I had not booked a time for the harbour cruise, so after we’d finished, our tour guide took the time to ring Reception and get us on the next cruise. The guided tours vary, however, according to personal knowledge and the sometimes political stance of the guides.

We didn't visit the Port Arthur historic site this time as we've been before, but if you've not ever been we would recommend that you do.
Our accommodation was a short walk to Stewarts Bay Beach, the local shops and the Pennicott wilderness cruises office. We loved walking at Safety Cove Beach, which is a very short drive from Port Arthur - a great crescent of white sand backed by trees, where you are often the only people there. As you drive there, the view across the water to the cliffs and sea stacks is fabulous, and you also get glimpses into the Port Arthur site grounds.
Viv has set up a beautiful accommodation in lovely part of Tasmania. It is spotlessly clean, extremely comfortable and had everything you could need and one of the best breakfasts we've had. Plus new bread and biscuits. Copious amounts of information about the local area Anya detailed folder on how all the utilities work. Viv was a lovely and helpful hostess. This place has everything you need and more. Thanks for a lovely stay, Viv. We highly recommend a stay here.
The cottage was a beautiful stay away from the hustle and bustle of city life here in Tasmania, our host was super friendly and we also were introduced to their beautiful dog too. The cottage was perfect for the two of us, had all the amenities we needed and also had a smart tv so we could watch Netflix/Stan etc. Definitely a must visit and stay whilst traveling around Tasmania!
The NRMA Port Arthur cabin for 2 was small, comfortable, clean and perfect for 2. The setting was fabulous and close to all the major sites. The Fox and the Hounds historic pub is just down the road and well worth a stop for dinner or a drink. The holiday park is a great place to stay. We went in the off season and really enjoyed it.
A stunning and convenient location near the Port Arthur Historical Site. We stayed before and after walking the 3 Capes Track. Very nice cottages with tranquil views of Stewart's Bay and the surrounding bushland. Lots of facilities but we especially liked the on location restaurant and bar :-)
This was one of the nicest cabins we've stayed in at a caravan park, it was modern, clean and very well equipped. The outlook from the balcony was so beautiful and the staff were very friendly and helpful. There was even milk in the fridge so we could have a cuppa when we arrived!!!
The hotel is close to everything. Only a short dirve to Lavender farm, cruise, Zoo and port Arthur historic park. The room was rather small for 4 persons but clean and all you need was there. I ran into some wallabys at night and a beautiful parrot in the morning.
this property was right next to Port Arthur and had a gate into the historical site. We walked to our night ghost tour and then had a lovely starry night walk back to the hotel. The restaurant food was very tasty and great value and staff were very friendly.
We love our stay. The cottage was clean and tidy. Amenities are modern and looks like a hotel quality. Direction to the cottage was clear and easily reached by car. The host was friendly and glad to took us for a tour of their farm.
Lovely recently refurbished cabin . Warm and comfortable. Well equipped kitchen. The Park is in a great location close to Port Arthur historic site and Tasman Is cruise. Cabins are well spaced in a bush land setting.
My accommodation was well located, close to the Port Arthur Historic site. It was very clean and comfortable and had everything I needed for an overnight stay. I wish I had more than one night!
Fox and Hounds was the perfect location for exploring Port Arthur. We enjoyed the food at the hotel's restaurant which has a lovely fireplace. Great value for money in a great location too.
The property was in an absolutely gorgeous location, right on the water with a view of the Port Arthur Historic Site. The property was really comfortable.
