Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
Delightful bed and breakfast. The hosts, Tim and Mary, were engaging and friendly.
Breakfast choices were varied and the homemade pizza menu was a welcome touch after a long drive when we arrived.
I wished that we could have stayed longer and I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone wanting to explore the Lake Taupō area. The one thing we learned on our drive up and down both islands is to base yourself somewhere for a few days and travel out each day - this is ideal for that!
The location was great with an amazing view of the lake and just what my wife and I needed on our honeymoon. It was great as a jumping off point to visit the surrounding areas like Lake Taupo itself and Tongariro National Park as we visited various Lord of the Rings filming locations surrounding and on the volcanoes. The room was clean and very spacious, with one of the largest bathrooms in our three week's staying all across New Zealand.
The spacious unit was lovely and clean.Everything you need in the kitchen and the oven elements and microwave worked well.Water pressure was very good. The TV was a good size with limited channels. The motel is a few minutes from Turangi
township. The little table and chairs on balcony were nice to sit in the sun to read or have a meal. There is a brunch bar and stools. The pillows were comfortable.
.
Turangi and TBM never disappoints. we had a great weekend out on the bikes during the day and sat down to dinner with front row seats to watch the Black Ferns. A new chef brought a fresh approach to the great dinner menu and breakfast will keep you going all day. The staff are always so welcoming and hard working. Charlie runs a great team and Val and Catherine greeted us like old friends.
Absolutely love staying at Creel lodge, it’s in a very quiet area, lovely garden surroundings, with lots of bird life to listen to. Excellent room facilities, netflix is an added bonus, great shower pressure. Friendly and welcoming hosts, very clean rooms, thanks to the lovely staff who do an excellent job. Wouldn’t stay anywhere else when in Turangi.🤩

Great value for money. Nice thermal pools. Special trailer boat parking space. Loads of room to practice fly fishing. Comfy beds. Location is handy to Turangi and only about 40 minutes from Taupo. Great to see progressive reinvestment in the premises. We'll be back again.
The owner is an absolute sweetheart always trying to help and connect everybody.
The most social and friendly hostel I've been to so far here in New Zealand. I liked it a lot because it's small with not too many people (but enough to meet others).
I'd always come back!
Ideal location virtually in town center.
Smooth check in and check out, thank you.
Cannot comment on breakfast as there is no restaurant at this facility.
Content to stay again, and over the years have holidayed at Turangi Leisure Lodge several times.
We had a great stay, very private and quiet. The continental breakfast was an added bonus.
Very friendly hosts and we would definitely stay again.
We highly recommend Tongariro Lodge for dinner. Great food and it's only a few hundred metres away
Everything was fantastic. And the room arrangements and cleanliness were superb. Location - Awesome! 40 min to Taupo and 40 min to Mt. Ruapehu. Spa in hotel! What else do you need! We will come back . . for sure!!! :)
The hosts were very friendly and hospitable. Breakfast served was delicious and a great value. Location was great as Turangi is a good base to explore the Central North Island area (Lake Taupo, National Park etc).
Bonus of having hot pools on site
Location to skiing perfect

We had a lovely stay. We were there two nights for a hike in Turangi. The facilities were wonderful. It was roomy, clean and comfortable. The grounds were amazingly beautiful. Highly recommended.
The location is superb. The hot pools came in handy after a cold day in the ice and more importantly the children playground and the animal zoo were really a plus for a family friendly hotel.
Lovely stay at Taylors Lodge with a very interesting history in Turangi! Heaps of space and nice and cozy for summer and winter stays. The hosts were lovely and will hopefully stay again!
The most fantastic apartment one could hope for, literally one of the best if not the best of our 14 weeks travelling around Australia and NZ and using numerous motels and hotels.
