The journey from Vang Vieng was very scenic and passes...

The journey from Vang Vieng was very scenic and passes through a mountain range. However all the curves can make some people dizzy, so we had some passengers feeling sick. Phonsavan is a very pleasant place, not very big, but well laid out with wide roads and beautiful Lao houses. The climate was cool during the day and cold at night during our stay in November. The visit to the silk farm was very informative about silkworms, how the silk is extracted, colored and woven. They have a nice sales outlet for various products. The reason for visiting Phonsavan is, of course, to visit the Plain of Jars. There are three sites, site 1 is the largest and has the most stone jars, The information center next to the ticket office has a nice display. Electric vehicles take passengers from the ticket office to the entrance. The jars are of different sizes and some variation in shape. Some are intact, but most have been fragmented due the violence that went on here over the years; bandits, wars, extensive bombing etc. There are a number of bomb craters in the area. The cave to one side of the plain is worth visiting. If you are short of time skip sites 2 and 3 as they are smaller and less visited. We spent a whole day taking in sites 1,2,3, a broken Russian tank, the spoon village and the historic city. The spoon villagers collect the casing remains of ordinance that fell in the region, process the aluminium and cast spoons, forks and other shapes. It was interesting to see how they do the casting and these are available for sale.
