Friendly staff, good location,

The bathroom was the cleanest of all the hotels/hostels I stayed at in Japan, which was incredible given the amount of people staying in a room. I also liked that there was a luggage room/area before the beds so that you couldn't hear people rummaging through their stuff in the night. Overall, very pleasant and comfortable.

Very good hotel for the price. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Room was business hotel standard. Window could be opened. Located directly at the main shopping district. Public bath that was also accessible to the public at certain hours. As for the current construction work: the men’s bath was fully functional and open despite of one smallish hot pool.

Really enjoyed Matsuyama and was sad to leave.
Really enjoyed Matsuyama and was sad to leave. The castle (with its chair lift up to it) was great. There are lots of options for shopping, eating and drinking and the whole area around Dogo Onsen is very nice.

Where there isn’t the sea, the city is surrounded by mountains. With the hill that has the castle on top, it creates a nice atmosphere. The onsen town (Dogo onsen) is where I mostly stayed. It was fun to see people walking around in the street in their yukata.
Like in many Japanese cities, the tram is cute and all, but it’s very inefficient. Moreover, you can only pay with cash or their local IC card. You cannot use standard IC cards like Pasmo, Suica, etc.
We ate at our wonderful hotel (Kowakuen) so I cannot speak about the restaurants.

Beautiful city full of amazing places to visit.
Beautiful city full of amazing places to visit. The must visits are of course the mountain top castle named Matsuyama Castle and also so many others like the Okaido shopping street and the Bansuino old French-style house. There are also delicious foods to try such as the Taimeshi which was delicious as well as the amazingly delicious oranges (mikaan) around the city. There are so many shops selling mikaan and mikaan juice that if you like fruits, you will love this city.

Matsuyama, in the winter at least, is pretty boring.
Matsuyama, in the winter at least, is pretty boring. The big onsen that they go on about is a tourist trap so I would not waste your time. I was told Spring and Fall were the best times to go as the Summer is hot and humid. The people seem OK but don’t really want to be bothered by foreigners.

I visited Matsuyama as part of the 88 temple Henro pilgrimage and so took in several temples, shrines and the Matsuyama Castle which is the most impressive castle I have visited in Japan thus far. The hot springs are also excellent and plenty of nightlife options.
If you love ryokans and art, and you are in Matsuyama, YOU HAVE TO STAY HERE!!! It was just a beautiful experience. Tani san was a very gracious, kind and understanding host. The property itself is a traditional Japanese house with two small gardens with ponds and rivers and fishes and moss...very well maintained. Despite being an old Japanese house, all the amenities are high-tech. And the whole place is wonderfully decorated with various pieces of art. It's just a great place to stay!...O, and there is pick up and drop off too!
Fantastic hotel. Excellent 13th floor spa (indoor baths, outdoor bath, sauna), which was clean and had long opening hours. Great location around Okaido (Central Matsuyama) - many restaurants and shops nearby, easy to get to the castle cable car (by foot) and Dogo Onsen (by tram). Good range of food and drink for breakfast in the restaurant, which had nice views of Matsuyama Castle. Very kind and helpful staff who always helped with our questions. Bed and sofa were very comfortable.
This is a newer, "boutique" hotel right around the corner from the Dogo Onsen. The location could not be better. The staff was friendly and helpful. The free citrus drink bar was a welcome treat, and the towel bar, where you can pick your own towel from a collection of famous Imabari towels for the trip to the onsen was also nice. The room was clean and well-appointed and the bed was large and comfortable. Breakfast was a fairly good selection of both Western and Japanese foods.
This was my third dormy inn stay so far over the last few weeks. The onsen is always the highlight. Good breakfast buffet with local specialties + the usual late evening ramen. Staff has always been very nice, be it in the reception, kitchen, cleaning, maintenance…
Matsuyama dormy inn is in very central location (okaido), in the middle of shopping district, close too castle and one minute walk from the trams. Rooms are clean and size is ok.
The room was amazing. It had a full sized bath area with rain-shower. Although this ate into the main area of the room, the actual sleeping area did not feel claustrophobic. The location of the hotel was about five minutes work to the ropeway to Matsuyama Castle. We could easily move around the city as there is a major tram stop.
We did not try the breakfast unfortunately as it was fully booked on the days we were there.
The Hotel located at a very convenient place. You can easy to access to Matsuyama JR Station to go to the Airport, or take a taxi to the Airport, to walk go to the Mall shop, walk to the Matsuyama Castle, and the Hotel is right next to the night-bus stop.
Also, you can see the ground -train which I think is the unique train in Japan just in front of the hotel.
I can't say enough good things about the location! Gorgeous small town, great view out the window, the staff goes above and beyond if you need anything. We rented the Japanese style room and while I found the sleeping pad a bit too hard my wife slept fine! We rented one of their private onsens and it was amazing! The breakfast buffet was also great.
Picturesque location, facing the moat that partly surrounds the castle hill. Recommend going for a night time walk and taking some photos of the hotel, moat and catle at night. Relatively accessible (15-min walk) from hotel to Matsuyama JR Station. Fully satisfied with good value, budget priced hotel.
The ryokan was impeccably decorated with beautiful Japanese gardens and ponds and gorgeous wood furniture and all kinds of art and beautiful items to view and/or purchase. The host was so welcoming and accommodating and thoughtful. It was truly an escape to a wonderland!
Friendly staff, clean and new room as I was assigned a room at the extension building next door. Quite a large and spacious room by Japanese hotel standards and comes with a full sized bath tub & workdesk.
They have a discount for the super public bath across the street, which is our favorite one so far in Japan! It's really close to the station, and they had free bike rentals.
Very convenient location. From Matsuyama Airport, there is a limousine bus and when you get off at Okaido Bus stop, just a 5 min. walking distance to the Hotel.
