Surrounded by Normandy countryside, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most damage has been carefully rebuilt, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.
It sits opposite a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is buried here. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations – the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.
Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.
The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.
Booking.com’s range of Caen accommodation includes luxury hotels, cheap B&BS and apartments with parking.

The city is friendly and it is easy and cheap to get around using public transport. There are good restaurants, we can highly recommend Le Carlotta, great food, wine and a warm welcome.
Tips for visiting Normandy sites.
We used the 12 bus to visit Pegasus Bridge and Ranville Cemetery. Do not get on the 12 EX as this is the express bus and does not use the same route!
However, reaching the British Memorial at Ver-Sur-Mer from Caen in September proved impossible on public transport and a taxi was needed.

We mainly stayed in Caen for the Ferry crossing to the UK.
There are many places to visit and a short drive to
Ouistreham and the D Beaches, which we found very interesting to visit and a big part of history.
In Caen at the top to the right of the Chateau/castle there is a court place area of beautiful restaurants, a bit hidden away, worth finding.

It was an awesome place in the heart of the city with a lot of things to do and to explore around. We really enjoyed our stay. The apartment was perfectly sized for a short trip, it was clean and well organized. The host provided all required information proactive and responded quickly to any questions we had.

There is enough to see an do for at least a good three/four day stay. Lots of great museums and churches to visit. We ate in the old part of the city which was lovely and the food and atmosphere were great. There seems to be great public transport and a free tourist bus. We were also lucky enough to catch the large Sunday market.

Caen has got everything. A racetrack, a canal with boats.
Caen has got everything. A racetrack, a canal with boats. The resting places of both William the conqueror and Maltide his wife. A museum that details the bombardment in World war two in photographs and objects is housed in the Hotel de Ville. It is a modest collection, but all the better for that. Caen was bombed extensively in the war, entirely by allied bombing. There is a city bus line 6a and 6b that takes you all around the city, in a circular route, so you can get everywhere easily.

Would have loved to spend more time wandering the streets,...
Would have loved to spend more time wandering the streets, as we only really had one full day to explore.
Loved the Abbey des Hommes where tomb of William the Conquerer is, could have spent more time exploring this site.
Seemed to be lots of inviting restaurants, so again if we'd stayed longer could have tried out a lot more of what was on offer.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. The hotel was on the edge of a nice neighborhood about a 30 minute walk to the center of town. The restaurant at the hotel had wonderful food. We also tried the Pizza Bus just across the street for a lighter meal and a few smaller grocery stores within a 10 minute walk to get a sandwich or snack. Plenty of free parking spaces and spots to charge electric cars too. We stayed here 4 nights as a base to explore Normandy and it was perfect for that.
Very refreshing. Simple but very comfortable. Large Queen size bed, not worn down. Breakfast gave many choice from eggs, croissants, cereals and expresso. It was a Heritage days in France the weekend we were there and many businesses were closed. We did not have a chance to sample lunch or dinner. Luckily there was a grocery store within a block from hotel. We rented a car from train station, which made it a convenient place to stay. I would highly recommend this place.
We have stayed at this hotel before and this visit was just as good as the last. The location is excellent right in the centre of historic Caen and everything is within walking distance.
The staff are friendly and efficient and our room was spotlessly clean and everything worked (internet, air-con etc), and the bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in.
No complaints at all - we will definitely be coming back to Caen, and will definitely stay here again.
The staff were very helpful. We had assumed that we would be able to park at the hotel but as we had not booked this in advance the parking was full. Fortunately as it was a Sunday the receptionist helpfully advised us that we could park for free nearby. As we were leaving the following morning this suited us. The same helpful receptionist gave us a good recommendation for dining out as we wanted to explore Caen a little. The breakfast was very good.
Good mid priced hotel. It’s a basic room with a bed, a table-chair and a small bathroom but it was clean and well maintained. It’s located in a business area but that’s part of the chain’s philosophy, so no romantic inner city site but very close to the Memorial de Caen museum and the main roads. A Super U supermarket is a 5 minute walk away.
Perfect apparthotel for a short stay in Caen. The apparthotel was situated within walking distance of the city center. We did not use the hotel´s parking but could easily park just outside (paid parking). Thankfully the airco worked perfectly during some really hot days! Personnel very helpful about where to go in Caen etc.
Good value for money and location isn’t far from city centre. Cleanliness could have been better but quality of facilities overall was ok, again, nothing you wouldn’t expect from a low-budget hotel. Breakfast was just shocking, absolutely not worth the 6,50€.
We wanted a low cost room as we were using Caen ax a overnight stop off we meet what we were going to get for an ibis hotel at this price.
It did gj’s job- although roon had a bad odour in it and thx minty air freshener they use didn’t improve it.
Arrived late and left early (for ferry) so never met the staff or used the facilities.
The late arrivals procedure worked well, great location for Caen or the ferry. Room big, clean and cheerfully decorated. Price was good..
Will happily use again
This is a lovely place to stay , our room was a perfect size . Great views over the roof tops. Staff were some of the best I’ve ever come across during a lot of hotel stays . I cannot fault this place the proprietor thought of everything
Spacious, clean, bright and comfortable Fantastic place to stay in Caen. We also loved the large park right next door. Short walk to town and restaurants. Host was incredibly helpful!
Prime location, close to everything we needed, including the tram network. Tram connection to the train station was easy, from the hotel. The hotel staff was helpful, and friendly.
Very nice hotel at the heart of Caen!! Cozy and clean room, nice staff and great location, extremely near to the Castle and historical downtown! Strongly recommended!!
Very clean and amazingly organized. We got the ferry into Caens at 10pm but the hotel had given us codes so that we could get to our room via the night entrance.
