Turangi has many interesting outdoor activities, and it is in the central North Island with mountains, rivers, Lake Taupo nearby, but we were just passing through and for us it was a place to break the long journey, rather than a destination in itself.

It's a great stopover location say between Auckland and Wellington but it's hard to find good food and the prices e.g. food and petrol reflect a lack of true competition and a feeling "well, you've got little choice"

A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo.
A comfortable apartment with great views over Lake Taupo. We stayed two nights and used it as our base for doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, so it was perfect for that. Oreti Resort is about 14km from Turangi, so you definitely need a car for eating out etc.

We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay.
We found plenty to do in our 3 day stay. We popped up to Taupo and went to Orakei korako. Then to beautiful lake Rotopounamu and walked around that. And did the picturesque river walk. We hired a rental car so we could look around easily. We could have easily filled in a whole week.

Central to some wonderful activities such as great rafting, the walk Tongariro crossing, Ruapehu. 'Up market' accommodation is very limited but if you can get into the Tongariro Lodge, it is excellent. Worth the extra cost. The locals are helpful and the town has a nice relaxed non-touristy feel; however avoid leaving your car parked overnight on a street. Shopping, apart from Groceries is limited.

Turangi is a lovely little town.
Turangi is a lovely little town. Not much going on in the actual town itself but has everything you need in terms of supermarkets etc. and easy access to the Tongariro Crossing and lots of other beautiful walks nearby. Recommend the Tongariro River Walk and Lake Rotopounamu walk too. Lovely swimming spots! I stayed for 4 nights in the end which was great. Recommend staying here! And also use Panda Shuttles to get to the Tongariro crossing or anywhere in the local area. Stay at Riverstone Lodge if you can!
We really enjoyed our stay at Creel Lodge. The room was very nice and clean, we had separate bedrooms, living area and kitchen, and porch. If you walk to the back of the property there is a private gate that leads to a nice walk by the river. The lodge is also close enough to take a short walk into the main town area where there is a grocery store and restaurants. I would recommend staying here and would stay here again.
Wonderful Backpacker/Lodge. The Host/Owner is friendly, helpful and operates a first-class facility. Location was great -- short walk to grocery store, pubs, and restaurants. The accomodations (I had room with Queen bed and shower/think was very comfortable. The Host's interaction with guest also seemed to get other guests to interact more and spend little less time on their phones
Tony's Lodge was a perfect stopover on the drive up from Wellington to Auckland. It's right next to Lake Taupo, so beautiful walks avaliable right around the corner. Only 15 minute drive from Turangi (grocery store and takeaways).
Tony is a lovely host, and his pet-friendly accommodation is very clean and tidy.
Our stay at Judges Pool Motel was appreciated, as it was situated in a quiet part of Turangi, and the room was clean and comfortable. We appreciated being able to go walking along the leafy river trail in the evening, after a long drive from the city. The Manager was informative and helpful.
Lovely little hotel - old but the rooms were nicely refinished. Had a very friendly welcome by the owner and a relaxing stay overnight, the bed was very comfortable. The hot pools out the back would have been great but we decided not to use them as it was pouring rain at the time.
Excellent point to break your journey on your way WLG -AKL . or specifically come there . Turangi is full of things for the nature lovers. When in Creel Lodge one is under towering old trees that makes one relax.
Amazing find! The most cost effective accommodation in New Zealand, great place to make connections with locals (especially if you’re looking for fishing tips), cozy common room with a fireplace, and great host.
The views are amazing looking out over Lake Taupo. In general the apartment was comfortable and convenient. The location is close enough to the ski fields for a day of skiing or to the mountains for hiking.
The location is superb. The hot pools came in handy after a cold day in the ice and more importantly the children playground and the animal zoo were really a plus for a family friendly hotel.
The most fantastic apartment one could hope for, literally one of the best if not the best of our 14 weeks travelling around Australia and NZ and using numerous motels and hotels.
The simple luxury and peaceful ,beautiful surroundings. It was a cut above any accommodation we ve stayed in , in New Zealand. The genuine friendliness of the staff too .
The restaurant serving very good meals with the presentation of each course being as professional as you would get in any five star hotel in New Zealand
