Excellent location, just right at the entrance of Lake Tazawa - the starting point of the lake road. It has its own car park with ample parking spaces. The staff who served us were very good. The public outdoor onsen was very good. Both the buffet breakfast and buffet dinner were of good quality, with a good balance of Japanese and western food. Our room was in the main building, looked a little old but clean in general.

We had the dinner and breakfast - elaborate meals and a great opportunity to eat home cooked traditional Japanese meals. Kids even tried the sea snails! Rooms were clean and tidy. Onsen was available for private use.

    Kakunodate was a fascinating town with the historical samurai houses. Obviously it would be spectacular at cherry blossom time. We were a little too early for the autumn colours. If you have a JR Rail pass it's an easy trip to the nearby Lake Tazawa(?)
