Dali has got the mountains, got the sea (a very large lake), got the sun, has history, the really old establishments, the new variations, great coffee, great tea, spicy food, and local delicacy... what's not to like?
People in Dali must be some of the most welcoming. They were calm, they were friendly, they were helpful. Relatively affordable comparing to other popular tourist towns. Could easily live there for another month. Miss the place already!

The Hilton in Dali was simply amazing.
The Hilton in Dali was simply amazing. The resort staff went beyond expectations to make our stay memorable.
The food was great and had many vegetarian options to choose from. There was also great coffee in the mornings with breakfast.
The swimming pool/fitness area were both clean, and well stocked.

We had a delicious and very reasonably priced meal for our party of 12 adults in a nearby restaurant.
Dali old town is very walkable, even pulling a suitcase.
We walked to visit the Catholic Cathedral and found a delightful cafe in a bookshop serving really good coffee and playing classical western music. It was great to relax there in the sun.

We did a lot of walking this trip and explored the old city, including parts that tourists don't usually see. I was excited to find Mexican food at Serendipity and we got some fabulous photos at a new area just opening up outside the south gate. It wasn't a long walk, but we kept seeing old-style buildings and finally found the entrance to Gudu Yu Yuan. 60 yuan entrance fee was totally worth it. It's not finished yet, but there was plenty to see. Replicas of old buildings from the Nanzhao kingdom. Beautiful lake and waterfall. We saw all of 3 people other than staff. Go now before everyone finds out about it! Also, outside the south gate, are a couple of less traveled paths near a creek that are pretty and nice and cool on a hot day.

There is so much more to Dali than we had time to see.
There is so much more to Dali than we had time to see. It is beautiful! We were lucky to be there on a day that wasn’t too busy so we were unhurried and had a great time looking at all of the crafts. Bought lots of wonderful tie-dye items and some Rose wine. Stopped at a bakery and had a wonderful cheese plate with some nice bread. It was a comfortable break. Of course we had to try the milk fan with rose jelly (across from MacDonalds). That was a yummy treat!

The province of Yunnan and the town of Dali are part of the beautiful "old" China. If you've visited the big, modern cities of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, etc), you owe it to yourself to visit the more rural areas which are bountifully rich in friendly local people, landscapes, great food, and local culture (music).
