There are better places to visit that are much less difficult to travel to than Gisborne, we went because we had never been before so it was good to see the place but wouldn’t go to the trouble to go back.
Roadworks from Napier to Gisborne were many with many stoppages. Long slow winding road. Gisborne to Whakatane however was a very pleasant very scenic drive starting off with Gisborne's horticulture then farmland then through a native forested river gorge. Gisborne's main retail strip looks great and is well laid out, the palm trees set it off so well on a sunny day. The famous Eastwoodhill Arboretum was a bit of a let down, it was a big reason we finally decided to add Gisborne to our trip however it didn’t live up to the online pictures and information we saw of it. Basically it’s just hilly farmland heavily planted out sporadically with various trees and riddled with many tracks colour coded but good luck trying to completely follow a particular track as some markers weren’t there at various intersections. It’s nice for a bit of a hilly tree walk but there is nothing particularly organised or grand about the plantings that looks anything like you see of tree plantings in various Botanical Gardens.

My first time visit to gisborne.
My first time visit to gisborne. Town centre is not big, but it was interesting. I enjoyed the botanical gardens and small museum during my visit. My visit was the middle of winter, but still enjoyable.

I found the Cook Landing Reserve to be underwhelming, It was disappointing in that there was not much about Captain Cook at the site, just gourds.
The Gisborne Museum was worth a visit.
The beaches would have been lovely if not for cyclone Hale.

The service is not good enough for one night stay...we ask for milk for cup of tea in the evening but the receptionist said, the housekeeper is going to bring for us...waiting for the evening no one is turned up even in the morning when we left...

Sadly economic conditions and the requirements for earthquake improvements has seen a lot of buildings in the CBD close up shops a sad barren appearance. No street performers no music in the air the city council needs to do more to bring the city back to life.
High prices on everything makes it even harder for the locals visitors think twice before buying.
A shaddow of what it used to be. 😢
The space and facilities available were easy and accessible. I was very close to where I needed to get my daughter to for her competition. Staff were all amazing. Keep doing a great job wāhine mā! Greeted with a smile and acknowledged in te reo when I greeted in te reo Māori followed by great service from the cleaning crew with a warm welcoming farewell smile when informed of something minor was broken. I love the location. I'm from gisborne and have always loved the beach I have so many memories at this beach and I loved nothing more than waking up to the beach every morning. The room was well cleaned and was cleaned while we were out for the day. The service was exceptional and any problems we had were solved right away. Definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a nice spot.
EVERYTHING! 😊 it was just PERFECT! 😊 Loved the pool view the feeling of just being there it was so good especially getting away for some mind space 😊 ILOVED IT! Definitely gonna book again in the future & stay for more than 1 night. ILOVE BEING AT THE EMERALD HOTEL ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO BE! 😊
Extremely comfortable place to stay. Bedroom, bathroom, living room and full kitchen. Alan and David are lovely hosts, and David provided delicious home-baked treats each day. Definitely felt "at home". Downtown Gisborne is a quick drive away, or a pleasant 15 minute walk.
Loved this place. Loved the history of the building. Tony was a great entertaining, accommodating, and hospital host who made me a fantastic breakfast and gave me great advice about visiting Gisborne. I also enjoyed meeting the other guests and the bed was super comfortable.
Really enjoyed our stay. Quiet despite being busy and packed. The facilities were awesome, clean and tidy with so much space to unwind. Hubby enjoyed the shower so much, definitely something we needed after a long few days, will definitely be back when in Gisborne
This is a very nice waterfront hotel, kitchette was included and the place was modern and the staff are friendly and accomading, there is a pool and a lot of people fish from the close by river channel
Wonderful apartment, comfy bed and had everything you could want. Great location too. Would definitely stay here again when in Gisborne. Owners were helpful and friendly in their comms also.
Fantastic presentation and a lovely breakfast included. This was the cheapest accommodation and certainly the best I have had in Gisborne. Two Palms get a 5 star rating in my book.
A nice room with everything one may need! I especially appreciated a wonderful tourist map of Gisborne and the area that was available at the reception.
