Located on the north bank of the Rio de la Plata, the city of Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital, largest city and main harbor and economic hub. Claimed by the Spanish, Portuguese and British, the city now reflects the typical South American cultural patchwork. With a strong Italian and Spanish legacy, its soul dances to the rhythm of tango and the African-influenced "candombe."
With approximately 1.5 million people, it houses almost half of the country’s population. Montevideo has a rich cultural life with important institutions like the Solis Theater.
Carnival is Montevideo's most significant celebration, and the "murgas" play and dance "candombe" in the streets, turning the city into a big party. If you plan to book a hotel in Montevideo for carnival, check the availability beforehand!
Don’t miss the "Ciudad Vieja" old town, Independence Square and the views from the top of the Salvo Building. Rodo Park is the most traditional park in the city, while the "Rambla" esplanade offers 8 miles of sandy beaches.

Didn't have too much of a chance to see the city as it rained for much of the time. Liked the Mercado Agricole very much though. And noticed that there are nice beaches, though the water in the mouth of the Parana was quite muddy. Seems a friendly place.

I found it full of trash, graffiti, and the people not as friendly as hoped for. I arrived on their independence day so almost everything was closed on the Friday. on the Saturday some museums were closed for the weekend. I saw the on off bus said sold out. I thought the colonial express ferry to Buenos Aires was from the port, but it was from the bus station which went to the city/town of colonial 2 hours away. I found most things to be double or triple the price of Buenos Aires. I was able to find a pretty good hotel for $50 so that wasn't too expensive. I think more worthwhile as a transition place rather than a vacation place. Punta del Este or Colonia are more worthwhile to visit. But Colonia probable only needs one or 2 days.

Montevideo was much better than I had expected after visiting Buenos Aires. I like the streets of the old town, and they lead to water and have nice buildings. The city town is pleasant enough. I think spending two days in Montevideo is plenty. If you have time, you should visit Punta del Este and stay there for a couple of days.

1st visit to Montevideo last year: the best feature for us was the rambla, amazing space for walking by the riverside for miles, and the fantastic bookshops. Best food was at the mercado del puerto in the old town. Easy to walk most places in the city
2nd visit: avoided the capital city, stayed on the edge of Carrasco (Hampton Hilton hotel) for the super-easy access to the Interbalnearia route to drive up the east coast. Carrasco is nice beachside town, but the shops are all a bit too posh!
My wife and I live within two blocks of the hotel and it is a comfortable, convenient and safe place to accommodate family visiting from abroad. We recently booked one of the larger rooms for our eldest daughter and her family. They really liked the accommodations and the location. There are two excellent cafes across the street; the Parque Villa Biarritz (with its Tuesday and Saturday markets); Punta Carretas Shopping within walking distance; and many other amenities close by. Public transportation and taxis are close at hand.
Extremely welcoming and helpful host, available for questions if needed. She greeted me (and let me check in early!) with a nice coffee and explained the room and then left me with the keys and how to check out. I needed help with the internet and she fixed it immediately. The stay was extremely comfortable with everything you'd need in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, with a sweet little balcony to enjoy and lots of space. I would love to stay here again whenever I return to Montevideo. Can't recommend enough!
Absolutely everything!! The owner and his wife are THE BEST HOST and HOSTESS we have ever had in our extensive travel’s. They helped us with car issues (big problems). All of their recommendations were spot on. Even texted us when the local’s started through the streets drumming getting ready from Carnival. Nothing was to much trouble, offered help if we needed it the rest of our trip (another 25 days in Uruguay). A class act!!
Great views from the top floor, super quiet, as usual the staff was super nice and quick to help if needed.
Rooms very clean and housekeeping staff excellent. I'm always happy to return. Way worth its value beyond most hotels in Montevideo.
This is my second stay at Fauna, but in a different room. Each is unique - individually designed with an impressive eye for detail. The hotel is chic, clean, quiet and in perfect location the main sights of downtown Montevideo all walkable.
We enjoyed our brief stay at the hotel. We will go back again. We also loved the breakfast, which had plenty of options. The staff was exception. We overpaid and they refunded us the difference.
Right next door to Shopping Punta Carretas, shops and restaurants, and very central. Great small hotel, spacious and comfortable room, friendly staff, regular breakfast.
Nice breakfast, comfortable rooms. Close to the airport. Nice area. This was my 3rd stay at Hotel Cottage which has become my go-to place when visiting Montevideo.
