Amazing mountains but hiking is not well established and they try to keep tourists to a couple of specific spots. I think some mountains are off limits due to military but with some modern and professional tourism development, the potential to unlock these impressive mountains and forests is amazing.
I loved being on the island and was hit hard by what I saw in the museum and historical prisons. Definitely worth checking out.
I would have to say that the beaches are average and if you're an explorer looking for isolated little bays etc., you'll find some beautiful places decorated with all sorts of plastic ranging in colour and age.
When i go there again - which I will in better weather - I will get out on the water and find places to go diving and island hopping.
A really nice place with lots of "potential" if developed properly. I'll be back as there is plenty to explore...

Very peaceful and quiet island with lovely beaches.
Very peaceful and quiet island with lovely beaches. The snorkeling was okay but as the ocean was quite rough we had to go to different islands than the ones recommended. Maybe the other islands would have been more impressive. Most of the restaurants were seafood with huge tanks full of live fish etc....not really our thing. We discovered Bar 200 and Ula Cafe. Both had great food and happy friendly staff.

Very small island, better rent a motorbike, but many small taxi,
Very good beach and seaside, no traffic. It's a good place to relax.
It's a very important place for Vietnamese people, for Vietnam History.
The museum and the prison must to be visited and Vo Thi Sau grave.

The main warning: do NOT use ferry boat to go there.
The main warning: do NOT use ferry boat to go there. It is 4-4.5 hours of vomiting for entire boat. 7/9 right next to me were vomiting. Sorry for starting from such a nasty details, but you should be aware of it :)
This island is very different from the rest of Vietnam, because comparing with the rest of Vietnam it is nearly empty :) And that's awesome! Road traffic is very low.
At the same time I had a feeling that entire island is targeting local customers, who came to visit prison, to respect memory of their relatives, who passed away there. Because of that, huge amount of shops are selling stuff for bringing it to tomb or church.
As a consequence of point above, it is very-very difficult to find non-local food. I would say 99% places offer only local food.
Another consequence is that noise from locals in night and early morning time (starting from 4-5 am when they wake up): karaoke, just shouting on the street, shouting behind your door in hotel, etc., etc.
Make sure you have earplugs, though they not always help.
I think the best you can do on this island is to rent motorbike and explore it yourself. There are quite some places with really amazing view! And not crowded. Again, it is unbelievable for Vietnam :) If you are in diving, most probably you can do it there as well.

The historical prison, the one thing we were looking forward to seeing on this island was closed. The beaches and nature trails are so beautiful, but the island seems a bit soul less. a few beach bars or restaurants that play live music would be so nice.

Great hotels with friendly and professional staff.
Great hotels with friendly and professional staff. Some of the best service in Vietnam. Incredible scenery. The water is crystal clear. Getting around the island was easy. Taxis were reasonably priced and driving around on a rented motorbike was fun. The highlight for me was visiting the grave of Vo Thi Sau at dusk. It was a very special experience. Also, do yourself a favor and go to the Beach House restaurant. Its run by talented people and I almost stayed an extra day just to eat there one more time. Finally, the helicopter ride back to Vung Tau was great. Well worth the money. No major complaints but there aren't too many accessible beaches on the island so I wish I had spent more time at Dam Trau Beach near the airport. I also wish I had prepared better for the nature walk in the national park. Next time, I'll bring my own snorkel gear and hiking shoes. Also, the island is full of dogs and a few noisy people which makes it hard to get a good night's sleep. Otherwise, it's well worth a visit. Unfortunately, the Vung Tau Ferry only runs once a week which makes it pretty useless, especially when their staff don't bother to update the schedule. I'm not sure what's going on there.
we were so impressed with our experience at this hotel from beginning to end, very good communication beforehand, prompt airport pick up. our room was immaculate, well appointed and spotless, no grim in any corners or round the shower door which is fairly common. the staff were all so friendly and helpful, breakfast covered all tastes with fresh cooked eggs to order, scooters available, and the roof top pool just perfect for a plunge at the end of the day with a great bar also on the roof.
For us, it was the perfect accommodation on Côn Đảo, as it is away from the main town and the larger hotels, allowing you to discover local life and restaurants. The hosts Trinh and Hai are attentive and helpful. We were able to rent a scooter through them and received great tips on what to discover on the island. Trinh recommended and booked the best weather day for the snorkeling trip. We really enjoyed the breakfast. The ginger tea, coconut coffee and fruit bowls were very tasty.
This was our first visit to Con Dao after 9 years in Vietnam and we were happily surprised with the island. Clean, tidy and charming.
Tan Son Nhat resort is in an enviable location that is not only walking distance to all landmarks in the town but also in the center of the main beach, which is huge, not busy at all and quite clean for Vietnam standards.
This resort would really have been a hidden gem but...
Loved the staff, the location on a private beach, the spacious rooms with views, the infinity pool, the breakfast and the very comfortable beds! Loved the Margaritas!! Loved the fact that there was a photogenic fishing port down the road and that we could rent scooters to explore the island. Nothing not to love. We spent 4 days here and enjoyed every minute! Thoroughly recommend!!
The room in the bangalow was great. Spacious and clean, the beach front was amazing.
The location is top - you get the beach but you're still close to the city center.
The staff was amazing, they accommodated my extra needs and amendments to the trip.
I believe it was the best choice to go there on Con Dao.
Breakfast was banging and they helped with the scouters.
Absolutely amazing clean and beautiful rooms.
Please stay at this place the host is amazing and very helpful you can cook in the kitchen for free and also use ingredients. The bed is super comfortable and nice hot water shower. You can hire a scooter from the hotel & roam the island { highly recommend }.... Nothing to complain........ Perfect stay
The receptionist was very pleasant and helpful, and always greeted guests with friendliness and smiles. We liked that the room was big, clean and comfortable. The hotel provides complimentary airport transfers, a bonus which we didn't see being offered by other hotels we considered staying in. Will definitely return.
The owner of the hostel is so friendly, helpful and easygoing. The hostel is also really cozy and breakfast is really good. In the beginning we planned to stay there for 2 nights and extended to 6 nights because we felt so comftable. Thank you very much for this nice stay on the beautiful con dao island!
Overall a good choice for a stay in Con Dao. Quite central location near to the supermarket and walking distance to many good seafood restaurants and the beach promenade.
Big comfortable bed, clean bathroom with hot shower, roomservice. Friendly staff who can help to book transport or rent a bike.
The serene atmosphere, peaceful location, and accommodating hosts made our stay on Con Dao Island perfect. We felt at home staying with Eden. We really enjoyed their dog Lulu and their love for him is especially heartwarming.
Good local private beach, very clean. Pool is also nice and clean.
Free transfer from airoport or ferry station.
There are new motobike renting service availbale in the hotel.
Nice restaurant terrace near the beach
My stay at The Secret Con Dao was perfect. No complains regarding the hotel. My room was clean and comfortable. It was really easy to rent a motorbike at the hotel. Location was great as well.
Motorbikes available at cheap rate. Google translate was helpful here and across the island. Simple and effective with central location close to beach and town with all expected services
