The Gateway to the Arctic

Unique, arty, traditional and lively pretty much sums up the great mix that the island of Tromsø has to offer. The city is home to the unique Arctic Cathedral, an array of pubs, cafés and an energetic street culture.

If you’re planning a day of sightseeing be sure to visit Tromsø Museum, Polar Museum, the University Museum of Tromsø, Mack Brewery, and the Arctic Alpine Botanic Garden.

The city’s main square often holds a variety of markets and its streets are lined with colourful and old-style buildings and houses. Tromsø is one of the best places to view the amazing colours of the Northern Lights.

    Tromsø is an amazing city.

Tromsø is an amazing city. It’s not as small as one may think.. has the right amount of grocery stores, cafés, bars etc. Quite a good nightlife, lots of young students/ tourists around so you’re never alone during solo travel! Tourism and guided activities are exceptional, they provide all the equipment, meals (in some cases) and transportation. Overall you will never be bored in Tromsø, I reccomend everyone to visit even if you’re not a sporty person there’s an activity for every fitness level.

I had a day there at the start and end of my holiday. Packed in quite a bit of sightseeing. The Troll Museum is a must visit! Delicious king crab platter at Dragoy. Saw the Northern Lights from the top of the cable car.

Tromso is in the middle of aurora ring.

Tromso is in the middle of aurora ring. We are here just for northern light. During our visit in March, all road is damped and muddy, not easy to get around. Find a place to stay in warm weather for watching aurora. Getting to mountain by cable car is my favorite activity to see Tromso at night with aurora.

This city is an amazing location to go on a Aurora Borealis tour! Marianne's expertise and commitment to helping travelers achieve their dream of seeing the Aurora is unmatched. I highly recommend booking multiple nights with her like we did. So good to support a local woman owned business. https://www.chasethelighttours.co.uk/

    Compact, uncrowded, clean city.

Compact, uncrowded, clean city. Traditional wooden buildings give it a fairy tale look. Great view of mountains across the harbour. The Troll Museum is a must. Take the cable car to view the island from above and enjoy the Northern Lights.

    A matter of "good fortune".

A matter of "good fortune". While we were fortunate to see the "Northern Lights" on the "Aurora Dinner Cruise", the people on cruises for the 2 previous days did not. Similarly, while we did use the cable car, it closed later that day at noon & had been closed for the 2 prior days, due to high winds. Shops, restaurants, cafes & museums were all within waking distance of the centrally placed Hotel [Clarion Collection Hotel With]. The Arctic Best Airport Express transfer coach [FB92] was directly outside the Airport Arrivals Hall, took just 15mins to get to central Tromso the Hotel was insight & just a 2mins walk from the drop-off station. Very welcoming people.

The breakfast was comprehensive and good food. As an English person travelled Ng having a good cup of tea in the morning is important to me and they had good tea :) but the food was really good in the morning. English and continental options available. Good service as well. The room was a very good size and clean with the staff being excellent. They were able to give advice about transportation, help with problems we were having and very friendly. The location was also very good all our excursions started around or at the hotel so that helped.

We had a sea view room. The view was beautiful, with the snowy mountains, Arctic Cathedral and bobbing boats. Half board was great value with buffet breakfast and dinner plus afternoon kifa included in the price. Excellent location close to interesting bars and ideal for transport to and from the airport. We saw the Northern Lights, which were incredible and went on a fabulous wild life fjord cruise where we saw 5 sea eagles flying over our boat. I've travelled around the world and Tromso is one of my favourite places.

Total ripoff! Extremely expensive for the very low quality and size of the room. The towels were rough and very small and very thin. There's no floor mat. There's no drinking glass, and there are no amenities - not even body lotion. The hotel didn't even have a city map. The staff were unprepared and couldn't provide any information; they told me to find the Northern Lights on my own, didn't know the nearest bus stop to the airport... Choose another option; for this price, there are better options available!

Everything about this hotel is jest perfect. This hotel located about 1.5 kilometers from the center, just next to a forest and a spring. That is the perfect place to watch northern lights, and to enjoy the nature. The place is very clean, and has everything human being needs. The stuff is very kind and pleasant to talk to. They helped me whenever I needed their help and even guided me how to catch the northern lights. Definitely, The best hotel have ever been to.

Liked everything! Comfy beds, large bath, washing machine, dishwasher, towels, bedding, all superb! Best part was Nils who served well above and beyond call of duty and deftly solved two of our glaring logistical issues. Should I say that he picked us up and delivered us and our luggage to a hotel to hold the bags and then to our destination in town when we found ourselves in a bit of a conundrum. Nils is an outstanding ambassador for Norway should get a raise immediately!

The house is just outside the city, which means it's easily accessible by car but far enough to see the Northern Lights out on the house's windows. We even got to see the Lights one night from the location. The guest was really friendly, helpful, and reachable. The house was fully equipped and comfy, and it perfectly suited 4 people. We had the best time there and we'll surely come back, maybe during summertime. :)

Comfortable, well designed and equipped apartament with huge windows, which with o little bit of luck let you watch northern lights from your bed. Well located, just 3 min walk from the bus stop and a little longer walk from the city centre and cable car station. Last but not least very, very nice and helpful owners! We're coming back this spring!

Lovely hostel, super nice and friendly with prices that are incredible for the latitude. If you want a place which doesn't provide luxurious comfort, but a great environment, with good common spaces, nice workaway volunteers and anyway all you need in terms of accommodation, kitchen and services that's the best choice in north of Norway.

The provided breakfast was very good and a nice way to start off the day. The location of the hotel, a hill up from the main streets, but still very close and easily walkable. An elevator made it easy to transport luggage. The rooms are compact and minimally furnished, but it was enough for my stay, and generally met my expectations.

Our host was very kind and helpful. This spot is nicely located out of the city and you can enjoy the peace and quiet there. An ideal spot to observe the northern lights. The kitchen is nicely equipped, you can use sauna or relax in the shared living room. Nice spot for travellers not focused on comfort but just the nice experience.
