Everything! We were so sad to leave. We love travel so have stayed in some amazing hotels across the world (including other Relais & Chateaux properties), but after our stay at Gidleigh Park, we realized this might have been the BEST hotel ever - even including some very special Japanese ryokans.
What made it so wonderful:
- The staff were all so genuinely nice. We had a lot of odd requests (since I’m pregnant and my husband has very specific dietary preferences), and I’m sure they secretly thought we were total weirdos, but they did a great job covering this up - no request was too strange! Examples: 1.) my husband became addicted to Innocent smoothies during our stay in England and insisted on having some every day (…even in a Michelin-starred hotel), so they kept them in the fridge for us and brought out the bottles whenever he wanted to pour a glass; 2.) I went down each morning to have breakfast but my husband prefers to sleep in, so I would request a takeaway homemade croissant for him. This request alone wasn’t too bad perhaps, but the croissants were so good warmed up, so we would later request to have them warmed right before he ate them - which they kindly did…
- The food is SUPERB - I could’ve eaten for weeks straight just at the casual lounge (we’d normally try the formal restaurant too, but saving this for next time when I have fewer pregnancy food restrictions, to fully enjoy!). Best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had, with perfectly poached golden-orange yolks (I’ve only ever seen such perfect eggs before in Japan), sumptuous afternoon tea, truffled cheese soufflé, really good strong pots of Earl Grey and Mini Pu Erh Cake (!) tea, amazing fresh fish and brothy beans… all in a cozy casual living room/conservatory setting where they let you open the patio doors, or sit outdoors (very nice if you’re being extra Covid-cautious while pregnant like me)!

A really lovely little village.
A really lovely little village. It’s a great base for exploring the stunning local scenery. It’s well served by an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and attractions. There’s a shoe making shop, an eco/refill outlet, a great wine and spirits shop and tasting bar together with any number of independent cafes and restaurants. And not forgetting the National Trust property at one end of the village - it’s not Open to the public but is very photogenic!

Lovely village but roads to and from very, very narrow, so be warned if you have a large car you will find yourself reversing to a passing place on occasions, or brushing the hedge to allow others to pass. The Ring Of Bells Pub is very pleasant but was a little cold in the bar area during our stay and the menu was good but a little restricted for those who were not great meat eaters. Apart from the Church there are no other places to visit in the village itself. The parking for the Pub is opposite the Church so a bit of a walk with your luggage - especially if it is raining! Lovely town with reasonable choice of places to have lunch/dinner & good co-op store. Plenty of interesting walks into the surrounding countryside (info provided at Cookshayes G.H) but sometimes had to walk on minor roads.

Lovely town on the edge of Dartmoor with excellent facilities - small Co-Op as well as a greengrocer, butcher and wholefoods shop, plus a pharmacy, newsagent and information centre. Plenty of choices for food and drink - we used both the Horse and Union Inn, but there are also cafes and other places to go for food and drink. Recommended.

A very pretty town and well situated for touring either the Moors, or visiting Exeter. You can easily access the A30 & A38. The town has some lovely views. It is easy to get around, and there are plenty of eating places, many choices.

Moretonhampstead is located in the middle of Dartmoor National Park. It is an excellent location for exploring Dartmoor and is recommended for walkers. The town is well equipped with a supermarket, other shops, restaurants and even its own motor museum.

Everything was clean and tidy. full english breakfast with your lovely chat and smile made our tummy full. every week we stay different hotels in uk so far we stayed all over uk from Scotland to cornwall but this house was mind blowing.
