I have been coming here regularly for holidays since 1969 and it is one of the world's most beautiful places. You can walk out in any direction and have a great day in the extraordinary environment, with lakes and the Cumbrian fells all around, to challenge the fittest, with plenty of great pubs, cafes and restaurants to reward your exertions. You are guaranteed to not want your holiday here to come to an end.

Lots of good walks within easy reach of Ambleside.
Lots of good walks within easy reach of Ambleside. Easy to get to places without using your car because of the good transport connections, even out of season. I would recommend Luigi's Italian restaurant between 5.30 and 7 for their happy hour and the very friendly Jintana Thai restaurant.

Room and breakfast good but having to go out of the building in the rain with our bags to get to our room as the access was from the side of the house. This was not mentioned on the website. Same again in the morning for breakfast. Very impersonal. Wouldn’t have booked this if we had known.

It's a tourist spot, we were so happy to visit various mountaineering and hiking stores in the city centre which we didn't expect such shopping experience in the first place.
Prices was claimed to be reduced but we didn't find them way cheaper, however the variety and brands compensated.

Loved Ambleside and surrounding countryside.
Loved Ambleside and surrounding countryside. Good restaurants and plenty to choose from. Parking chaotic, based on a disc scheme allowing one hour only. Check with property if parking available.
Always take a foldable rain jacket as weather is erratic.
The service was impeccable as was the morning breakfast service. The owners have put a great deal of work and thought into restoring and keeping the place up to date and modern while making sure to retain the old charm of the guest house from the late 1800’s. There are little details that that show up such as a drying room for folks to dry off their hiking gear and shoes thanks to the notoriously rainy and wet area. They are close to Ambleside (3-4 minute drive to the shipping and dining district) The room and bath were top notch.
This hotel was very well run. Breakfast excellent, room excellent spotlessly clean, Staff in all areas of the hotel were very helpful friendly and professional. I loved the Spa facilities they were lovely and totally relaxing and again very clean. My husband travels worldwide so can be quite critical of hotels as he's been in the best and the worst of them and he thought ambleside salutation hotel was great and he made no negative comments ...and that's saying something.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Water Wheel. Perfect location in the middle of Ambleside, but nicely tucked away from any noise. Debbie and Paul were wonderful hosts, and just lovely people in general! The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and the flapjacks were amazing! The attention to detail and homely touches were very much appreciated. Would highly recommend this guesthouse to others!
Great location and great accommodation for the price. We booked last minute and chose Ambleside Central as there wasn't much available unless you wanted to pay an extortionate amount. To be honest we weren't expecting it to be very good but it was perfect for us. It's basic accommodation but very clean and comfortable. Parking was also included. We were really impressed and would definitely stay again.
Everywhere in the hotel was very clean and decorated very nicely. The food was lovely. The afternoon tea was outstanding. The bedroom was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly. The hotel was exceptionally dog friendly. The grounds were lovely. Overall, a nice hotel and we really enjoyed our stay.
Spacious and clean. Very light. Good kitchen area and lovely bathrooms. The beds were comfortable and we slept well. Good bedding and towels. Comfortable sofas with lots of cushions. Great location near to the centre of Ambleside with parking.
The rooms were extremely comfortable and the breakfast was one of the best we have had when visiting Ambleside. There was plenty to choose from for our little one too. We would definitely stay again.

Louise and Shaun's warm hospitality and breakfast they provided was fabulous. Their position was a few minutes walk from restaurants, hotels, shopping etc. We loved it!
The hotel is fantastic, location, food, staff and Dog friendly.
You can't ask more from a hotel in the lake district!
I would defiantly recommend a stay here.
Close to Ambleside centre, with parking on site. Ideal for our needs with a dog. Spotlessly clean and very welcoming. We will return to Ferndale Lodge.
