At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel...
Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel to other cities nationally and internationally as Basel is sandwhiched between France and Germany so, up to you where your heart will lead you for a day trip towards those countries.
Peaceful and efficient. Trasport good, people chilled.
Be ready to bring some money if you need to stay longer.

Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it.
Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it. The old town is so so nice. It's also very well connected to other places like Reigoldswil for the waterfall or to Augusta Raurica which I recommend.

Lovely city, but very expensive!
Lovely city, but very expensive! Mind you that most kitchens close at 21h and don't accept customers well in advance, as well as lots of places are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Go for all the beauty of the city, but bring the big wallet and plan to eat out early if you don't rent a place with a kichen and cook yourself. Don't bother to stay on a Monday, and consider to leave early on a Sunday, those two days are very, very quiet in Basel!

Very nice city, everything is very tidy.
Very nice city, everything is very tidy. The public transportation is very good. A lot of tramways and every several minutes coming the next one. We used tramway 8 to go to Germany and tramwat 3 to go to France. I recomend to visist the Stadtcasino and also to take the train and to go to Augusta Raurica about 20 km from Basel. It was a nice site with roman remains and also a nice rural walking outside the city. There are trains every 30 minutes.

Very vibrant as far as the museums are concerned.
Very vibrant as far as the museums are concerned. City for art lovers. Also very easy to move within the city with any kind of public transportation. Transportation was free, and the museums are for half the regular price with the card given by the hotel.

Basel is a very touristy and romantic city.
Basel is a very touristy and romantic city. It is very easy to explore and walk around. Quite expensive, I would recommend to visit museums on the first Sunday of every month(free) and also find an accommodation which provides Basel card in case you would like to tour the city by bus or tram.
I booked a “double room” with “ 2 twin beds” (as clearly stated on the confirmation from the booking.com) and the hotel gave me a single room with 1 twin bed (as also confirmed on the invoice) with the argument that i booked a room for 1 person so i only get a single room(?!) then they said i can have a double room if i pay 20 chf more and that if i dont want and if i dont like the room i can get my money back and leave (and that was at night already). What else to say, never again, and will share this hilarious story.
Good location for day trips by train, 10 minute walk to the train station. Also short walk to Barfusserplatz for tram and Christmas market. We walked all over the central/old town area. Room was spacious and well appointed. I liked that the mini bar was a fridge so I could put my own drinks in it. The beds were more comfortable than most hotel beds. Staff was very nice and helpful. Breakfast was nice upstairs in the rooftop bar, featured local products.
One of the best hostels i ever stayed . Best in Switzerland
Staff are very nice , special thanks to lovely ESRA (anladınız TR)
They send you email of free tram ticket but you dont need it . Because i walked everywhere
Location = get out of train station from media matket side. Go 300 meters directly on a lovely street . Everything you going to visit are on other side of station
Sink in every room
I advice you to stay here,
This hotel was amazing! I would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone who is traveling in Basel. The location is right in the old town close to restaurants and shops. The hotel and rooms were very quaint and had the quintessential Switzerland feel. Very clean and safe. The restaurant and reception staff were amazing, too! Great value for a beautiful place to stay.
Lovely breakfast with fresh salmon salad, fresh fruits and other options. A bit pricey for a breakfast but I guess it's been widely expected in Switzerland. Basel is a lovely city. We did not spend enough time to explore the city but we took the tram to have a quick view and chexk up on the city. The short trip brought some lovely vibes of the city by night.
BED!!! There was a free option to get a double bed for one person! Loved it. I liked the room setup too. The location was comfortable and easy to access via various lines of trams available. Definitely met my expectations with its lower prices compared to rest of Switzerland. Free coffee and tea whenever was nice.
Loved the convenience to Old Basel through the Spalentor Gate. Bus and Tram stops right outside hotel made trips around Basel and into France and other parts of Switzerland a breeze. Easy transfer to airport, Basel Card for free bus, tram. Reception always ready to make sure you get the right transportation.
Garage underneath the hotel was very useful. We loved the breakfast with many choices. Just like other places in Switzerland, Basel is an expensive city. So the price of this hotel was a real value for money. We'll choose this hotel again if we'll be back in Basel.
Staff was very kind and welcoming, offering us coffee or tea while we waited for our room (we were early). The breakfast was wonderful, one of the best we had during our 3 weeks in Switzerland. The room was spacious, and we very much enjoyed our stay.
Wonderful hotel in Basel. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Good size room and bathroom. Smooth check-in and check-out. They provided us with a great free travel card. However, you are right next to the cute old town so you may not need this card.
This hotel really has its act together - super efficient and well organised. Arrived to find even a little street map of the city in the room and a kettle for tea (unusual in Switzerland). Perfect place to break while travelling by rail.
We had a delightful stay at the Rochat hotel. Centrally located, clean, comfortable, pleasant staff and very good breakfast. I loved having the window in the room open, seeing the view of a nearby church and hearing the church bells!
Given the high price of accommodations in Switzerland, this hotel is a reasonable value. The people in the restaurant are pleasant and the food is a value. The location is good with a few signs of it becoming a rougher neighborhood.
The hotel staff was very kind and helpful. The room was clean and it had a good layout. It also had a nice view of the football pitch. Good coffe during breakfast, even for takeaway.
Friendly , professional and polite staff . Close to city centre , with tramstops just a few steps away from the hotel . Excellent view from the 14th floor .
