The trip along the Dalsland Canal is fantastic - very pretty...
The trip along the Dalsland Canal is fantastic - very pretty scenery and you can watch how they operate all the locks. Lunch on the boat was good and they time it so you don't miss any of the lock action. Bengtsfors is a friendly town and the hostel is a pleasant place to stay with Annika, the friendly manager. It's a good idea to start the canal trip from Bengtsfors rather than Haverud because Haverud has just a camping ground, a canal lock and a few hotels. When you get off in Haverud, you can return to Bengtsfors by train.

The town itself is fairly quiet and plain, but it is located on a beautiful lake. It has two supermarkets and an internet café with top coffee (not filtered!). The enjoyable Dalsland Canal trips start here (one way boat with lunch, one way train) and the cultural precinct in the old paper mill at Fengesfors is well worth a visit. The area's forest/lakes scenery in general is very beautiful.
