Toyohashi is only about an hour from Nagoya where we live, and yet most people we know have never been there! It's great for a weekend break or even a day trip.
We enjoyed visiting a restored house from 1800 years ago, the castle, a plum orchard, the city hall exhibition of the unusual handheld firework made from a bamboo tree, and various other places.
Our first visit was for two night, and then we went back for a day trip.
We'll probably go again for the Natural History Museum a little way past Toyohashi.

Toyohashi may not be a tourist mecca but there is a nice streetcar service and a lovely riverside park featuring the remains of Yoshida Castle which has been partly reconstructed and includes excellent historical detail provided by volunteers free of charge. Really worthwhile.

Wonderful to be away from the major cities, significantly less crowds, traffic and a much slower pace of living. Surprisingly taxis and establishments close to the JR train stations took credit cards but going further out and at ma and pa stores, cash only. However, there are many 7 Elevens, where their ATMs are tied to foreign banks and you can get cash.
