The stay was really great. Within walking distance to lots of good restaurants. The staff were all very friendly & helpful, especially with organizing a parking space. Really loved the provided instant ramen as a quick snack through the day. The western bed was comfortable, if not a little bit firm with a thin mattress covering (I could feel the springs under me). Great for a solo traveler!

We stayed one night, which was fine. It was a small space, with not much room to spread out. The internet was fast and reliable, though. One thing we really appreciated was that we were able to drop off our backpacks at the front desk before check in time.

Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
Stunning rooftop pool and view, if that's what you want, this one can do.
Nice breakfast, but a bit crowded. I had my favorite cold dish with fish on day one, but no more for day two. I guess you need to be there earlier.
Walking distance to the castle and JR station, let's say it's in the middle of the tourist area, you have access to everything.
Nice staff, borrowed me a wine opener and sewing needles.
The hotel is walking distance to Kumamoto Castle, which was a major selling point for us. It’s an easy tram ride from Kumamoto station. We had a King double - the bed was big and comfy, we had ample space for our luggage, and we could see the castle out our little window. You can choose between Japanese and Western breakfast set menu - we had one of each and bother were decent and filling!
The view of the castle was stunning.
Staff were friendly at check in and luggage that was sent to the hotel was stored. Amenities were all available (not necessarily in room but you could grab what is needed) in lobby. Washing machines were not congested which was fantastic and staff were willing to help exchange notes for 100 yen coins to do laundry.
The hotel is just next to a very big shopping arcade, with a lot of restaurants and shops. So you will definately find something you like to eat or shop. But even you are full in the action, you will have a good and quiet sleep (especially after the onsen 😄). The Kumamoto castle is is short walking distance and the street car station is also nearby.
This is a rather big hotel in downtown of Kumamoto with good facilities and rooms. There is also lift parking which cost 1100 Y / night. There is a very near Tonkatsu restaurant ( 300 meter) far from the hotel .which is very good. It is 7 mins. drive from the hotel to Kumamoto castle. Overall rating is high for this hotel. Good buffet breakfast too.
The location was great with only a short walk to Kumamoto Castle, the host was very friendly and quick to reply to messages. She met with us at an earlier time than we originally arranged as we arrived early.
Parking across the road was easy and free, and the house had a great style to it.
Close to shopping areas, covered malls right outside hotel, lots of eateries minutes away, 7/11 right next door, Kumamoto Castle minutes away.
Excellent location!
Room was very clean and roomy for a Japanese hotel. In our public bath was also extremely clean and nice.
Best hotel experience I've ever had. Staff there especially Ms Yamada (Ms 山田) was extremely helpful and smart. Excellent English. If we visit Kumamoto again, no doubts I'll stay at Hotel Nikko again.
Good location. 1 min walk to the shopping arcade and 5 min walk to kumamoto castle. There is a good Italian restaurant near the hotel. Clean room. Polite staff. Comfortable bed.
Super friendly & helpful staff, very clean room with comfortable bed. Good size space for a Japanese hotel room. Great location near tram stops, main thoroughfare & castle.
The location was very close to the main shopping road and you could see the Kumamoto castle from the hotel room (or go up to the hotel roof top to get a better view)
