Great little city (by China standards), with great selection of food all over the city, and quite cheap esp the seafood. Very friendly people all over. Good feeling of personal security even at night. Taxi drivers are all honest with their meters. The highly hyped Gulangyu island was interesting but has become too commercial with tourist shops and restaurants all over which spoils the otherwise serene island that has no motor vehicles operating, so mainly walking.
Tulou round houses about 2 hrs drive west of Xiamen are highly recommended for a full day tour. It was our highlight of the trip.
The Hulishan Cannon Fort park is worth a visit, very pleasant and interesting.

Coming from Shanghai, Xiamen is a city on a more human scale...
Coming from Shanghai, Xiamen is a city on a more human scale and is full of different places of interest. I find that there is a "little" resemblance with Hong Kong in the sense that it is not a flat city. There is a lot of relief, parks, lakes, and walks to do. There is the Skyway + Huandao Scenic Road along the sea for those who like cycling. For those who like to walk, there is the waterfront (lake, park, etc.) and the impressive 23km long Mountains to Sea trail".

Xiamen is a city with a super-chilled and relaxed vibe, food is everywhere and everyone is always eating! The people are really chilled and the city has many different spots and areas, up/down hills, beaches, islands, and the main island is not so intimidatingly huge. One morning the city was hit by a strong typhoon and by noon the streets were already clean from all the collapsed trees. The next day there was a beautiful shiny sun and it was great to walk around the city. I really liked it.

Xiamen is a great seaside city for relaxing!
Xiamen is a great seaside city for relaxing! The pace of life is slower than many other Chinese cities and shop owners, as well as the public seem to like to readily stop for tea and chatting. The garden and parks are nice for strolling and the seaside "boardwalk" is great for biking. Moderate temps also make this a nice choice for most seasons. There is also plenty of shopping on Zhong Shan Street and the surrounding malls, as well as a few museums, and a variety of restaurants with various cuisines. Gulang Yu Island is a nice blend of history and modern leisure convenience; just try to go during the week and not on golden weeks to avoid the crowds. The only major disappointment was the Shapowei "Art District" which turned out to be just a bar/café district with very little art. I also was unable to see Xiamen University campus as you needed a reservation three days in advance, and even when I tried to register online in advance a couple minutes after the registration opened, it was already full! Overall, I will return to Xiamen again.

My first review on Booking.com:
My first review on Booking.com:
Xiamen was chosen mainly for the weather - 21-25°C in early December during our 3-night stay.
We covered as many sights as we could, including a day-excursion into rural Nanjing County to visit the UNESCO-listed Fujien Tulou. Xiamen strikes us as a very international city, modern, but not super-urban, and of just the right size. Our ferry-ride to Gulang Island (Gulangyu, also a UNESCO-WCH site) confirms our impression - the mere sight of foreign tourists and ferry-riders was shocking.
Transportation in the city is more than convenient. Although we used taxi most of the time, we also rode buses, subways, and high-speed trains.
The below photos provides only a selected view of Xiamen and its surrounding areas, which we intend to return and spend more time to explore.
The staff were friendly and helpful, very professional, especially a Mr. Gary Xu.
We booked 3 rooms from 30/3 - 1/4 at the hotel. Our plan was to visit the island of Kinmen on the 1/4 and be back to collect our 5 bags at the concierge on the 2/4. However, we were stuck on Kinmen Island because of fog (no ferry) and we ended up back collecting our 5 bags only on 4/4. The hotel kept them safe for us all that time and the staff still remembered us as the owners of the bags:)
The food choices for the breakfast buffet is more chinese style. There are western choices like breads and sausages but mostly chinese. There's also a coffee machine in the buffet area, they provide soy milk if you want plant milk for your coffee. It is rather near to the airport and it seemed quite new, so the facilities are clean and well maintained. The view was really nice from the top floor open area. The cleaners were friendly and offered extra bottles of water.
Location was great - right at the base of the walking street and right across the street from the wharf/seafront, which was really pretty esp. at night. Plenty of great shops and restaurants within easy walking distance.
Hotel was clean and well run. They cleaned up the sand we got all over the place every day and left the room feeling clean and well kept. We had a harbor view from our room.
The hotel has an amazing location at the sea with a promenade inviting for (not only) morning walks. Several restaurants in the immediate vicinity. The room had a beautiful modern, clean design and was equipped with a comfortable bed. The staff was very friendly and helpful. All in all, it was a pleasant and comfortable stay during my business trip to Xiamen.
Surprisingly beautiful lobby of the hotel with a lovely ambience and colorful lighting. Very helpful and humble staff at front desk with with a professional smile . The young lady at the front desk was so kind that she took approval for us for free extra bed we needed. Wonderful room decoration and bathroom amenities. Most lavish systems installed in room.
The hotel was very clean, and the mattress was extremely comfortable. Even if staff did not speak much English, with the translation app on your phone, they were extremely helpful and polite. Breakfast was also very good. And if you want to experience an Asian breakfast, go for it. Everything is extremely fresh.
it's close to airport, and easy to spot. It is very convenient if you're going on an early morning flight.
the staff has limited English capability, but they're very willing to help (using translation app) and also super friendly!
Will definitely come back when I visit Xiamen or transit through Xiamen! Good job!
a new hotel with good hardware and software. the views at upper floors (25th and 26th) are amazing. the staffs are very professional. very thankful to Ms Vinnie and her colleagues, who kindly helped me make a quick check-out and sent a receipt (which I almost forgot to).
This hotel is hidden gem. The location is excellent, walking distance to park, food and metro station. It's supper clean. The staff is very friendly. The breakfast has a lot of choices and price is very good. I like very thing about it and will stay there next time .
This is simply next level. Great location in Xiamen (surrounded by Nature and Forests), Oustanding service from the personell (with possibility to decent english speaking employees). Fantastic restaurant with great variety and super service. The rooms are fantastic!
Great value for money for me. The hotel is close enough to the train station but you still need to take a taxi going there. Overall, a very nice experience.
