This was a typical small German rural city but with the benefit of the largest Roman archaeological park and museum. The medieval market place and cathedral were amazing enhanced by the contents of the history museum.

If you are interested in history then the Archaeological park is worth a visit. Best to visit on a dry, sunny or partially sunny day. You can cycle around the Xantener North and South lakes. Overall, Xanten was a relaxed and safe place to stay. Many folks out walking and historic town centre nice to visit.

The wonderful biking and hiking trails along the banks of the Rhine.
The splendid LRV Roman Museum (a must for schoolchildren, very modern and interactive learning).
The rose garden with its little hidden surprises.
We loved the atmosphere of the town with its very inviting terraces. The beautiful Sankt-Viktordom, the Klever Tor and Kriemhildmühle (Nibelungensaga).
The restaurant 'Petersilchen" was a true delight!
It exceeded our expectations.

Xanten was such a pleasure to discover and visit.
Xanten was such a pleasure to discover and visit. I particularly enjoyed the Roman experiences but all the rest added to the joy of my visit. Will definitely recommend Xanten to other visitors.
Xanten is safe and easy to explore and a solo traveler can enjoy it just as much as groups
This is a difficult rating because had our check-in gone smoothly, I would have only positive things to say. More on that below... Otherwise, the rooms were cute and clean. We serendipitously booked Room 3, which has its own private patio. Super nice. There's also a great little back yard with tables and chairs. Location is a little out of the center, but fine. Also loved the fridge stocked with beer, soda and water for 2 euros each and a coffee maker in the room, as well as coffee machine.
We chose Xanten for our overnight stop on the drive from Calais to Berlin, and we were very glad we did so. This hotel is lovely, very clean tidy and newly refurbished, offering comfortable dog friendly accommodation. It has pride of place in the market square, with a lovely view, overlooking the cathedral. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby for evening meals and the hotel breakfast was excellent. The hotel staff were lovely and friendly and we will definitely go there again.
The house is excelent value for service. The owner was very kind, as agreed he was wayting for us even before we arrived. We had no issues at all. The house is big and comfortable. All facilities work with no issues, the kitchen is great and allows for own cooking. There is also a garden which can be used for grilling and relaxing. For us definitely higher value then a hotel.
The room was clean and quiet and had an exceptionally comfortable bed and bedding. Also, our room had a very nice patio so we were able to enjoy fresh air all night long. But the real kicker at this hotel is the staff. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and kind, with the front desk person, Dandy, offering especially excellent service and conversation.
A spacious attic loft room with private bathroom plus sitting and dining areas, enough storage space and the furniture and fittings good quality, comfortable and well maintained. Easy check in with a lock box in the Host's absence. Close proximity to the waterfront restaurants is a bonus. A great place for a short or long stay. Highly recommended.
Comfortable upstairs apartment, friendly owner and wonderful location just a few minutes walk from the medieval Xanten city and just a little more to the nature reserves next to the Rhine and the partially restored old Roman city. Amazing.
This is an excellently kept newly refitted property very close to Xanten. It has all basic amenities and is in a quiet location, ideal for walking and enjoying the nearby lakes. Top marks to the hosts, who have a good eye for detail.
Historical, elegant hotel in Central part of town. Quiet and the front desk clerk was amazing! Friendly, helpful. Advised me on things to see and do while room was being cleaned. I arrived early. Safe place for my bike.
Really easy check in on the machine outside. The cycling facilities were excellent; secure garage and the best bike pump I have ever used :) Nice connected room for two groups of two.
Easy kiosk check in. The room was small but well equipped. It had everything we needed. We liked having the backyard area available to us and the bicycle garage was great! Thank you!
The apartment is in a quiet location close to Xanten. Ideal for our one-night stopover on a longer journey. The room was comfortable and the owners' representative was helpful.
the appartment is very spacious had all amenities and is very well located at the very centre of Xanten. The host met us on site and check in was very smooth.
Some of the staff spoke a bit of Dutch or English but they were all friendly. It is possible to park next to the hotel. Nicely decorated and great location.
Breakfast was excellent,
The hotel is located in an area that invites for (short) hikes.
The nearby city of Xanten with its Roman past is a nice bonus!
