Germany’s oldest city and a provincial capital of the Western Roman Empire until the 3rd century, Trier is overflowing with exquisite architecture and Roman ruins such as the Amphitheater and Porta Nigra gate. The colossal Cathedral Trier is also the oldest of its kind in Germany.
The historic landmarks continue with the 2nd-century Roman bridge that crosses over the Moselle River, which also passes through nearby Luxembourg and France. Cruises along the Moselle start in Koblenz and end in Trier.
Trier was the home of Karl Marx and the 15th-century University of Trier is home to a large student population that often refers to the university as Karl-Marx-University of Trier. His birthplace is now a museum, Karl Marx House.
A wonderful example of the Christmas markets in Germany can be found each year in Trier, at Hauptmarkt Square in front of the cathedral. Make sure you check Booking.com for special deals on hotels during this period.

Trier is an interesting town, however be aware all the facilities & services you might be familiar with & expecting, may not be available. Such as; taxi, Uber, restaurants open outside of regular hours - these may all be an issue, according to what we experienced.
Some of this was due to Christmas & New Years limited hours and services. Taxis and Uber-type services are an issue, and appear unreliable.

I love Roman history so Trier was a must-see for me.
I love Roman history so Trier was a must-see for me. The main tourist attractions are easily searchable online but the city is small enough to be completely walkable. I was there at the end of November and there were already Christmas markets set up which was fun to walk around - buy the Glühwein (mulled wine) if you're there at that time.
You have to eat at Weinstube Zum Domstein! They have traditional Roman food offerings which were delicious. I loved the meal so much, especially sitting in the Roman Basement (Römer Keller) where they have displayed Roman artifacts. Such a cool dining experience.

Trier is quaint and manageable for a small city.
Trier is quaint and manageable for a small city. Friendly and hospitable locals. There were enough English-speaking workers in various establishments. I enjoyed the walking trails. The city has a lot to offer for Roman history enthusiasts. It has a far reaching and interesting history as a city in its own right.

The city is very historic and was not overrun by tourists at the time of our visit. We stayed two days and nights and were able to see the old town and Roman amphitheater, baths and Porta Nigra, on top of the main two cathedrals and main square and shopping. The city seems very safe and easy to access by walking or bicycling. As with other cities we visited during our two-week Germany trip, we parked the car and walked or took public transportation.
Perfectly situated on a hill overlooking Trier. Only a short 20 minute walk into the old part of the city from the hotel. Lots of spacious parking and secure storage for our eBikes. Staff were exceptionally helpful upon arrival and answered every query as fully as they could. Our room had a wonderful view towards the city plus a balcony. The room itself is generously proportioned with proper wardrobes to hang and store clothing/shoes and suitcases. The place was very clean and the breakfast plentiful.
The best aspect of this hotel is a spectacular location - just actress the street from the Porta Nigra! View from my room was superb, and so much was in very easy walking distance. The room was a good size, and beds were comfortable. Breakfast, although expensive (typical for good German hotels), was a great buffet with many tasty offerings. I found my room to be clean, but some travelers in my group felt that the room was less clean than desired.
We liked the location. It's a little out of town, so it would have been a struggle to walk into Trier and back, but we visited Trier the following morning in the car. The Hotel is in a quiet woodland setting. We loved the large balcony, and the staff made us very welcome, and we had evening meal on the terrace. We stayed at several other hotels on our road trip to Italy, but this was our favourite.
Perfect location for a visit to Porta Negra. We stayed one night here on our way through Germany and we had plenty of time to visit the centre of town as it is literally across the road from the hotel. Facilities in the hotel were as you would expect from a Mercure. Comfortable room and breakfast was good. The bonus is the parking underneath the hotel.
The apartment is few metres away from the city centre and many shops within close vicinity. The apartment was very compact and had the basic things needed to stay comforatbly. It felt like staying in a hotel but with self catering. We enjoyed our stay in Trier. Thanks to the host who always respond to my questions on time.
This hotel was a delightful find in Trier. It's just inside the historic center, within walking distance to many of the main sights. My room was beautifully decorated with a huge bathroom, and had lots of cozy touches. The breakfast was very good, and we had a delicious lunch at the historic restaurant, too.
We loved everything about this lovely hotel ~ a modern hotel (inside) was a surprise of beautiful maple and walnut entryway, reception and breakfast room, our room had all the amenities needed, the breakfast was wonderful and the location was unbeatable, steps from the Porta Nigra!!
Big hotel room. Private parking near the hotel.
Trier city center reachable by bus. 4km walking distance allongside the Moesel to the Roman bridge in the city center is possible when you first walk to the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke.
Nice hiking routes starting near the hotel.
The location was excellent! Right in the heart of Trier and extremely close to the city sights- all are within walking distance. The hotel is modern, clean, has comfortable beds and the breakfast was good. I would choose this hotel again due to location and value.
Location, location, location. This hotel is a short walk from the train station and puts you right in the center of town where you will want to be to see the sites of Trier. The staff was extremely helpful and the breakfast was pretty good too.
While not in the proper center of Trier, Hotel is only a 10-15 minutes walk from all mail attractions. I was able to leave the car at the hotel and visit all sites without having to search for a car park.
Clean modern hotel, good size room, close to main attractions of Trier. Staff were very helpful with an unusual request. Enjoyed staying here at an ok price. (€87) Aircon was great and easy to manage.
Good hotel in the centre of Trier close to the historical centre. Nice breakfast. Parking available but we where on motorcycle and there was a parking place next to the hotel.
Good hotel close to the river and sight seeing areas in the old town. We enjoyed breakfast and that there were free bikes you could use to explore around the city.
