Russell is heavenly.
Russell is heavenly. It is so beautiful and we had the best time.
What a gem this part of the world has access to! The oysters were amazing. The food/experience and service at the Duke of Marlborough was first rate. The sunsets were surreal. The visit to Urupakapuka by ferry led to an amazing day of exercise and adventure, we had a heavenly swim in one of the islands isolated beaches by ourselves.
What a day!🥰

If you are around Bay of islands I suggest to not stay at Paihai and go to Russell. Smaller, quieter and much nicer. There is a ferry across to Paihai if you want to go there.
Long Beach is not to be missed and we enjoyed the Flagstaff walk too.

Nice & quiet in the middle of winter.Gets very busy at summertime so booking ahead is essential. Always good food at The Duke restaurant & great front rooms with a balcony with sea views & a view of the street, great for a couple of drinks before heading to the bar!

Russell was so cool.
Russell was so cool. Easy to get around and so lovely in Winter as very few people. The history is interesting and the people were mostly friendly.
Next time we will stay 3 nights as we really relaxed and book a trip to Sage restaurant for a special treat.

It is a beautiful location and peaceful.
It is a beautiful location and peaceful. There are enough cafe's / restaurants for 4 or 5 days but plenty more in nearby resorts. The one thing you need to realise about NZ is that "eateries" general cafe's and take aways open early 6 or 7 am but close early too, 3 or 4pm. In general the stop serving an hour before. A lot of restaurants open 12 to 3pm and 5 to 8pm. If you want to eat late you need to check on line for places. Very few apart from Asian places take orders after 9pm.
Good supermarket. Lovely sea and beaches around. Public loos are quite prolific in NZ including beaches with changing rooms. The whole country top to bottom is wort a visit. Low traffic levels apart from cities. Lot of mountain roads.
Had a great stay here and recommend it. Our room was spacious with a well-equipped kitchen with full fridge, comfy bed, and sofa. Plenty of room to spread out. There is wonderful espresso across the street at “Hell Hole”. The hotel is 1.5 blocks from the waterfront and ferry. It was a pleasant little walk to go for a swim. Lots of restaurants within one block. Recommend Hone’s Garden for incredible pizza. Russell is a delightful place and this hotel was spot on for our stay,
The location was beautiful, and during the day it is quiet, with boats coming and going, people enjoying a stroll along The Strand. Many stopped to take photos of the hotel and bay. Our bungalow was spacious and we could sit at the dining area and watch the boats and passers by. It was what we had hoped for when we booked. Meals at the hotel were delicious with friendly staff. A special mention of reception staff who were welcoming and helpful.
An absolutely beautiful historic building with stunning views over the bay. We had an amazing 2 bed suite with small lounge and terrace, the place was spotless. Greg and Peter were perfect hosts, so happy to help with any question and was so lovely to hear the history of the house and area. Tea, coffee, homemade biscuits available and honesty bar. Peter makes amazing breakfasts! Russell town is so pretty too, particularly out of high season.
Our hosts, Peter and Greg made our stay a memorable one. The lodge is a two storey beautiful character home with wonderful views of a harbour. It’s a short easy walk into Russell. The breakfast provided was gourmet and plentiful, beautifully cooked by Peter and presented by Greg. They offered helpful information about the area including great eating out options and excursions. Highly recommend this for your stay in beautiful Russell.
Pool was amazing, proximity to Russell town was perfect - short walk past some really pretty houses. Location was great in that it is sort of in a valley so while it was really windy at the beach down the road it was nice and calm at the motel.
Pool nice and quiet- not much overlap with other users.
Had a toddler and preschooler and they loved it too
James was so lovely and made our stay that much better.
Loved the service! We booked a cabin for two nights. After the first night a class of (rowdy) primary school students arrived and stayed in the rooms on the opposite side of our cabin. We were content to stay there, but got an upgrade to a bigger (private) cabin, without having asked.
The town of Russell is a 5 minute drive and from there the ferry to Paihia in 15 minutes. Both a must see!
The location is very good , walking distance from the sea waterfront where all the restaurants and bars are located .
The breakfast was correct , we found everything in the room and the refrigerator . We had breakfast in the terrace just out of our room, it was great ! Mrs Sue , the owner of Villa Russel is a very nice lady and help us a lot giving very interesting suggestions .
Annie was such a warm, friendly and helpful host. She welcomed us with a beverage, crackers and a delicious homemade relish. She went out of her way to help us figure out our plan for visiting the Bay of Islands. The apartment was very comfortable and clean with a well furnished kitchenette. The yard and gardens were beautiful. We highly recommend staying at Aimeo Cottage.
Lovely upstairs suite, with a large deck facing north and west. On the waterfront, right in the heart of Russell, yet quiet and peaceful at the same time. The host, Karen was terrific: friendly, but never intrusive. We got fresh fruit, yogurt etc provided for the continental breakfast, along with cereals, toast, juice and delicious homemade preserves. :-)
We were in unit D which was spacious and had a fully equipped kitchen. Seaport Village is literally in the middle of Russell less than a minutes walk to the wharf, and even closer to shops and restaurants. Cleanliness is excellent and the manager is very friendly and helpful. We will stay here again.
Gorgeous wee place in a terrific location. Short walk into Russell, restaurants and to the Paihia Ferry. Lovely outside area in which to relax and admire the view. Everything you could want was in the cottage. The Hosts were just lovely. Best place yet!
This hotel was one of the cleanest & best maintained that we’ve been to. The reception was welcoming & the way the people take care of the property and guests is exceptional. The magnificent view and location In Russell can’t be beat!
Fantastic waterfront location packed full of charm and history in the heart of Russell. Rooms are comfortable and charmingly decorated . Restaurant food is amazing
We only stopped in for a night, but our room was nice and warm when we arrived. Facilities seemed well looked. Will definitely be back next time we are in Russell!
