This multi-coloured and complex African metropolis is the biggest city in South Africa and probably the living example of its much debated history. Johannesburg is not the capital of the country, but it represents its main economic hub, and is also the seat of the Constitutional Court.
Popularly known as Jo’burg, the city is constantly under renovation in all areas, allowing it to slowly but decidedly overcome its ‘Apartheid’ legacy. The Central Business District (CBD) alternates historic buildings with skyscrapers and a lively nightlife. Suburbs like Melville, Newtown or Rosebank have a bohemian atmosphere. With some of the best Johannesburg hotels, Sandton City and Hyde Park are modern residential and shopping areas.
Get to know South Africa’s history at Constitution Hill, the Apartheid Museum, and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Natural areas like the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Cradle of Humankind’, the Lion Park Nature Reserve, or the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve are located outside the city.
OR Tambo International Airport is the largest airport in Africa, while the smaller Lanseria Airport offers connections to mainly domestic destinations. Hotels near Johannesburg’s airport are a popular choice to avoid the last-minute rush. Check out the wide range of Johannesburg accommodation deals available on Booking.com.

It is bigger than you think it is, it is a country within a country. it is not one thing, it is many. Worlds within worlds. it is a city of work and energy. Your entrepreneurial instincts get stirred just being here. Its people are its selling point, but also again, its people who have chosen the way of crime are at another scale. Do not go into Johannesburg wide-eyed and foolish. It will reward you for that.

I lived in Johannesburg for over 40 years and loved it.
I moved to Cape Town 10 years ago and now only visit Johannesburg on business. Unfortunately, Johannesburg is deteriorating daily as the effects of government mismanagement take their toll. It is as sad as it is relentless.

We travelled through it en route to Safari in Kruger.
We travelled through it en route to Safari in Kruger. It is known to be a little unsafe for tourists, but there are many Ubers about and we never felt unsafe. If you stick to main areas, you'll be fine. Nelson Mandela Square has great options for dining. We visited the Apartheid museum which was really good
The breakfast was plentiful and delicious including a basket of fresh baked goods. The breakfast room was lovely with linens and fresh flowers on the table. The beds were comfortable with luxury linens. The staff was delightful, ready to help us in any way they could including a driver who picked us up from the airport and would take us anywhere within a certain distance of the hotel. I left a converter/adapter in my room and came back through Joburg 2 weeks later and they had it for me. Really attentive and gracious staff.
I stayed at this hotel a couple of times & is to me the best place to stay due to it's central location to Pretoria & Johannesburg, easy access to highways, various restaurants to choose form at Monte Casino within a few hundred meters of walking distance. The hotel itself is very good in all aspects.... from a nice clean room, the breakfast, a fairly good fitness center, good, safe parking, friendly & helpful staff etc. Excellent value for money
The best laundry service I've seen in a hotel
Das Hotel war super! A new concept that really makes sense! After traveling for 10 days in South Africa I run out of clean clothes. On my arrival I could use their washing machine and dryer. THE HOTEL IS VERY WELL EQUIPPED 👌.
Also the rooms provide you with all the necessities including kitchen and household equipments. The location amazing! Plus Gym, which was essential to me. I felt like home 🏡. Thanks 😊
These were the best beds of our whole 4 week trip in South Africa (so far - now starting week 4)
Front staff was SUPER , especially the pregnant girl whose name I forgot.
We got a free upgrade (room with better view)
Location was great, easy/safe walk to Maboneng, but don't walk in the other direction (warning of the hotel)
Rooms are nice with a modern look, as is the whole hotel.
I loved everything about the Fairway Hotel and spar. The room was neat, I had my room decorated for my boyfriend's birthday, the hotel went all out to decorate the room with roses etc, it was the most beautiful thing I have ever set my eyes on. The breakfast was the best, everything about this hotel was 5 star. I recommend this hotel for everyone wishing to come to jhb👌
The establishment is very well situated close to the Sandton CBD. The rooms are simple, smallish but adequate, clean, and comfortable. It is very secure, staff are very helpful and available. It is very good value for money. For me, it is a perfect place to stay for a short business trip in Johannesburg. Breakfast is extra, but reasonably priced and very good.
South Africa is currently experiencing electricity problem, with regular power cuts during the day. I appreciated that the hotel had a generator that kicks in when power is cut. Sandton is also a relatively safe and decent location. I found the staff, especially security guards hospitable. The apartment was also spacious and featured a bigger balcony.
It was my first time in South Africa and I was a little nervous. The hotel felt very safe and it was possible to go straight down to the Rosebank shopping centre from a lift in the hotel and was also convenient for the train to the airport. I stayed before and after a tour with Intrepid and would certainly use it again if staying in Johannesburg.
Excellent staff, cleanliness and hospitality. The breakfast was the best we had in our entire 14 day trip in South Africa spanning 8 places.
The location is safest for tourists in Johannesburg.
The room is beautiful and the lighting as well.
If you need a bed for the night which is close to the airport for an early flight, then this is ok. However, for the price, the rooms and overall experience were not the best. There are better options in Johannesburg just a bit further out.
The hotel is central. While not suitable for walking, it is a short distance to great restaurants, highways, the airport etc. The gardens and pool are beautiful, this place is really good value for the Johannesburg area.
This was a one night layover in Johannesburg after being in Paris, Kenya and the Seychelles , for two weeks.
This property FAR exceeds all expectations.
The couples spa treatment was the absolute best.
Hotel facilities were good, and close enough to OR Tambo Airport. Good breakfast, and rooms were clean and comfortable. The underground parking was good, and the hotel was very secure.
The hotel is in a great location in Sandton. The decor is nice and the rooms were clean and modern. The hotel breakfast was fantastic. the best part of the experience was the spa.
The hotel staff was exceptional! The facilities are lovely and the food was delicious, but the warm and engaging staff made our visit to Johannesburg truly memorable.
The cleanliness of the hotel, the staff was amazing and friendly and the location of the Hotel love it. Was my first time in this part of south Africa was nice.
