Walks and cycle rides in every direction (roads not too frightening); both sides of Mallerstang worth walking as well as the valley (Garsdale rail station at far end); near Pennine Bridleway, on C2C I think; historic with the viaducts, Settle and Carlisle Railway

Lots of places to eat including Take Aways ,fish & chips, chinese, and Indian. Lots of gift shops, and a bric a brac shop. There is a good chemists and a chiropodists shops as well.

Didn't really stay long enough to explore Kirkby Stephen,...

Didn't really stay long enough to explore Kirkby Stephen, just two days to do two hill walks, but it seems to have a lot of potential for me to return and explore its history etc. Disappointed that information at bus stop was poor - one timetable was too high to see, and the route of another service wasn't obvious to the visitor. Also, some public footpaths in the surrounding countryside were very difficult to follow because of poor signage - some is very old and confusing.

Kirkby Stephen is a great location to base a walking holiday, being surrounded by moors and valleys to explore. There's also a preserved railway to visit too. There's also a wide selection of of cafes, restaurants and pubs serving good quality food with friendly service.

The warmest of welcomes from the owner set the scene for a wonderful stay in this great place. The property is full of character and set right in the middle of the little town. The room was spotless, roomy and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and freshly made having ordered it the evening before. Great hosts who seemed genuinely interested, chatty and enjoying what they do which makes all the difference. Highly recommend this wonderful B&B if you are looking to stay in Kirkby Stephen.

Fabulous place with a wonderful host. Great breakfast included, full English with selection of cold items. Very dog friendly, dog allowed in breakfast room too. There was a fridge just outside the room which is perfect for walking lunches and the room we were kindly given had a patio perfect for our dog and there were bowls and poo bags available too. Farmland and view was beautiful, a 10min drive from Kirkby Stephen so still close to amenities.

The owners are the most wonderful people, with lovely conversation and a really inviting and considered approach to the hospitality of your stay. The location is perfect and the accommodation was spectacular, unique and very comfortable. My only issue was I didn't get to stay in this brilliant apartment and Kirkby Stephen for another night, I couldn't recommend your stay at the Apartment of Antiquity enough.

Nice room (with a fan) and view over market sq. The lady who checked us in I think her name was Jules deserves a pay rise…she has all the customer service skills required to encourage return visit. The young lady at breakfast was also nice.I would recommend the Pennine hotel and would rebook.

The room had a bath which was really great for a Coast to Coast walker for a good muscle soak at he end of a long day. The hotel was perfectly situated on the trail and also with lots of amenities; shops to stock up on snacks, and other pubs and restaurants.

Room was very comfortable and clean. There was a room where we could dry our damp boots (this was a real bonus). Staff were very friendly and helpful. Set right in the centre of Kirkby Stephen. We had a rest day here and felt so relaxed after it

I loved Kirkby Stephen Hostel for the drying room. It was such a welcomed facility on a very wet weekend. Denise is a lovely host, very welcoming. The kitchen and communal room were well equipped and in such a lovely setting of the old church.
