The city is fun, but...
The city is fun, but...I just spent to much time on the public transportation app. Here is what I learn that would have been most helpful for American travelers.
If all of your party has their own Visa Credit card with tap to pay feature, you are already going to have an easier time!!! It doesn't take any American Express. You have to tap to pay go on the DPO, Ostrava's public transportation. The bus police doesn't always check, but as a visitor this was persistent fear.
If you have a child, who will ride you all the time, or you have a person who doesn't have a Visa with a tap to pay feature. You must only get your bus card at the Ostrava main train station!!!! I went DPO kiosk near an Albert supermarket, as stated on the DPO website! It was not dispensing cards. The city decided to get rid of cards recently, except at the Ostrava Main Train Station!
Don't you bother to bring cash on the public transit. It doesn't take it.
Don't try to get the 3 day pay by the DPO App. The app is broken. I even uploaded an image of my kids' picture and passport, and the app still did not take any money, and did get me a pass. It take 2-3 days for them to approve the photo and passport and but the app was not letting me purchase the 3 day pass. I only know that they still had cards because I sent an email to DPO after my stay and they advised me to go to the Ostrava main train station next time. Every regular Ostrava person, I talked to said the cards are not available, but I guess they have them only in one place.

Ostrava is constantly changing for better.y first visit was back in min 1990s and it was a horrible, dirty, industrial place. Now it is green, mostly clean and fun. The former Vitkovice area refurbished, remade to an excellent art, event and historic place with that industrial background defo worth visit and other places as well.

To be honest,Ostrava was chosen as the last night of my holiday in Hungary as it was convenient for travelling to Krakow for my flight home the next day.(Yes, I know it's in the Czech Republic, but my holiday was in Hungary).
My interests are football and railways, and I knew Ostrava was an excellent destination for a railway enthusiast like myself.
As for the city itself, apart from the Forum complex, which was excellent, I didn't see anything to particularly attracr me, although it was dark most of the time, so no disrespect to the city in case I just missed its great attractions. However I am aware it is an industrial city.

Ostrava is growing up really fast!
Ostrava is growing up really fast! I have not been there for couple of years and I was surprised how many new cool places are there and how many different activities you can plan there. It is definitely worth a visit! Unfortunately the local airport still does not provide any flights except only one from London and Warsaw so if you fly, like we did, you have to go from Krakow, Katowice or Prague.

Ok, so you are looking at a 300000-strong city, which was a mining / smelter / ironworks city for well over a 100 years. This entire business was shut down in the 1990s. Any critical review has to take this into account. The heritage site of Dolni Vitkovice, Landek, Bolt Tower definitely worth a visit. Check it out! The rest of the city is a mix of communist era style places and relatively few older buildings - you can still spend a day walking around the centre, along the rivers etc. Sometimes you may feel you are going back in time 30-40 years. Climbing up nearby areas (slag heap / Halda Ema?) is also something you would rarely see - and consider the environmental effect that it may have. Beers are good, mexican restaurant too!
Wonderful location in the heart of Ostrava. The hotel is small and cozy. The staff is friendly and welcoming as well as helpful. The room was spacious with a huge bed, a comfy sofa and a kitchenette. The bathroom had a big bathtub. It was a cold weekend when I stayed there and the heating worked perfectly. The room was equipped with a hot water kettle so I could make tea and coffee. The breakfast was fine with a wide selection of savory and sweet choices and very good coffee. I really liked staying there and will return the next time.
Very clean and modern apartment with an equipped kitchen. Located in the middle of Ostrava so it is a 10 min drive to the different parts of the city (the centre, Poruba, Dubina etc). Although it is situated on a busy street the windows are facing the backyard with trees and quiet (the traffic can't be heard). There's parking at the back (I discovered a back door access with some delay but yes there's a back door too!) I came in April during particularly cold weeks and I really appreciated that the central heating was still on.
At check in the receptionist spoke English and gave us all the information we needed. She walked us to our room and was very friendly. This is a family friendly place with lots of activities for kids but at the same time was quiet and we enjoyed it as a couple. The restaurant is amazing with great decor and good food. I highly recommend this place for a real Czech experience off the beaten path and typical tourist hotels.
This was the second stay and similarly to the first one, it was relaxing stay in comfort of this small retro hotel. Although located near center of Ostrava, it is a quiet place with a large park on one side. There is a nice small restaurant (Restaurace Dama Pykova) nearby, just five minutes walk. Parking on the street is available before late afternoon, when people living around start to return home.
The apartment is very clean, to spacious and equipped with everything you need for a longer stay. There are pots and pans as well for cooking. The staff is very friendly and responsive to messages. There are various small shops, bakery and supermarket Billa (10 min walk) in the vicinity. We recommend this place to stay in Ostrava
Perfect location! Cute church and square outside. Some pizzas, falafel, small supermarket,... Parking spaces of hotel are nearby behind the corner, safe, watched by the city camera. I think that there is also a tram very close.
Hotel staff was super-nice, room + bathroom super-clean. Price / quality = 100%.
Large bed with a settee in a separate room through kitchenette with minibar and some snacks available plus tea and coffee with kettle. 2-3 minute walk from Stodolni station, Stodolni is a street of night clubs, bars and take aways though far enough away from this Hotel to not be an issue.
On the day of my check-out, weather was really bad and hotel owners gave me a free ride to my destination.
Great location, extremely kind people, comfortable and clean accommodation . I definitely recommend. 10/10
Thank you for the great experience.
Perfect place of you want to see the old factory, the hotel is basically in it. Basic, but clean. The mattress could be better, bed was very hard, but not issue for me since I prefer it that way. It's a you get what you pay for kind of a deal.
Nothing really, i have picked this hostel because you can walk 10 mins to Ostrava university.
I was lucky the hostel was empty during my stay, but I think if there were people staying during my time it wouldn't be quite as I have experienced.
Nice room overall. Close to shower &toilet. Comfortable bed. Secluded from street&traffic. Good security for entrance. Very friendly &professional receptionist. Nice little kitchenette. Would consider for next visit to Ostrava.
Breakfast has improved. Not that it would be anyhow not okay before, but now its even better :) As frequent guest I was really happily surprised the hotel improved that. Wider variety of choices made great start of my day!
The hotel is very near to our office which is a great value for the money you pay for it. Breakfast was good - a lot of food to choose from and the services were okay.
Great and clean hotel ,great parking ,stuff are great they all speek English and they are very friendly. There was a good breakfest and good coffe in the bar
The hotel's location amidst greenery and trees was a breath of fresh air. It was so relaxing to take a stroll in the gardens and enjoy the natural beauty
