Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.
The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!
I travel frequently. Fez, and Morocco in general, is underwhelming. While several day trips are possible, the main attraction in Fez is the Medina. It is interesting to walk through it but after a few hours I had enough. You cannot enter most attractions (Mosques, University) so you're left wandering the Medina. The shops are diverse in terms of merchandise but they are overly aggressive and often rude.

I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased.
I lived in Fes for five years, so I will be biased. I love this city and it has a special place in my heart. I learned Arabic here over 20 years ago, I came back some years later and worked as an English teacher and Arabic to English translator, and my recent visit was a visit for the peace of my soul.
If you are going to visit with a family, I would recommend an apartment in the new city (la Ville Nouvelle), especially the two that I stayed in. The old city (the Medina) is not easy to navigate with a stroller and the facilities in the riyads there are not family friendly (unless you are willing to pay top dollar), to say the least. Staying in the Medina means roughing it, so if you're young and single, or a young couple with no children, maybe you can hack it.
For food, I highly recommend Jawhara Cafe next to the American Language Centre (Rue Ahmed Hiba) for breakfast (great harsha, malawi, coffee, tea etc.) and Restaurant Florence on Rue Hassan II for lunch or dinner; they make amazing couscous, tagine, and every great Moroccan dish at great prices.

What an amazing city - filled all the senses .. such warm hospitality, amazing food and history abounds - the artisans and craftsmanship of the local people was astounding - I loved every minute during my stay from the getting lost in the Medina's alley's to exploring the historic city - My tour guide Hassan was magnificent - so spoiled by all his knowledge and ability to read his customers.... We so enjoyed all his recommendations and more importantly - all the knowledge he shared with us - Please make sure you allocate enough time in this beautiful city and enjoy the hidden Roads and their restaurants! The food and spices are simply amazing!

Fez is good just for a day and it’s good to go to chefchouien from there for a day trip. Be careful of the people who take you to the tanneries and local outlets where they overcharge for stuff. The Medina has lots of shops having cheaper stuff of similar quality so better to check in different places before buying. Food is very good everywhere. Taxis are cheap. Place is very safe.

just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time.
just dont. Morocco has a lot more good cities to spent time. If you really want to see then 1 day would be plenty but for me even this duration might be too long. In this city you always need to be on your toes or else you are an easy target for people who wants to just squeze money out of you
We had a wonderful stay here. The riad is beautiful, in a calm street right next to the road, so it is quiet but easily accessible by taxi and a short walking distance from all the attractions in the medina. The breakfast was very good. Mohsim was the perfect host. He made us feel very welcome and helped us with everything we needed. The tours he arranged for us were great and the mint tea he served us was the best we had during our stay in Morocco.
Great location, good breakfast. Parking is around 8-9 min walk. Ilyass picked us up on our first day and walked us back to the parking on our last day. What a service! We paid 60 dirhams for two nights for the parking. We also availed a tour guide and we were very satisfied.
Thank you to Doha and Ilyass for making our stay in Fes unforgettable! and to the rest of the amazing staff.
We felt most safe in Fes, compared to other medinas in Morocco.
Fabulous hotel! We were on a road trip around Morocco and this was one of my favourite hotels. The staff were very friendly, especially the Restaurant Manager - sadly did not get his name. The Moroccan restaurant served the best Lamb Tagine I had in Morocco and the breakfast was definitely among the best we had on our trip. The swimming pool was lovely and the seating around it was very appealing. I would come back to Fes just for the hotel!
Amazing Service, great staff which was so kind!
Also the most beautiful hotel I been to, the place is like a museum - the palace itself is just amazing, and full with great art.
We stayed first night at a regular suit, and when we asked to extend and they had no room, they were so generous to upgrade us to a better suit which was available.
great breakfast! Best I had in Morocco
there is absolutely nothing to dislike about the riad haj palace & spa. the hotel is the very essence of fes and it will leave you with all wonderful fellings of Morocco. the staff are super friendly and they will attend to your every need and want. the food there is 10/10. I cannot say enough good things about the hotel & staff. absolutely amazing wonderful people.
The Fes Nass Zmane riad is fantastic! It is located very close to the Fes city center, the internal architecture of the riad is beautiful, the terrace faces on the Fes medina.
The room was incredibly cleaned and comfortable.
The breakfast was also rich, with a lot of choices between sweet and salty dishes, both typical from Morocco and international.
This beautiful hotel in the heart of Fes is perfect. Hassan was the absolute best as were the other staff. They made us feel so welcome and ensured we were comfortable at all times. The room was incredible and the breakfast and mint tea were delicious. We loved everything about this accommodation and highly recommend it, 10/10; 5stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the best to stay in Fes. Well located, clean, comfortable. Rooms have a lovely view of Fes. Terrace also has a full view of Fes and its quite useable. Our host Omar was so very kind, attentive and helpful. Thank to him our stay in Fes got much more better.
The kitchen of the hotel was also very delicious. I’d recommend to give it a try.
This hotel Riad is absolutely a Representation of Fez Medina Rituals, spending one night is just one thousand nights and night . You will surprised by the amazing details, architecture, mosaic & moroccan Zelij..
You will feel home by the kindness professional services & the great hospitality which we had received by the staff.
Our arrival in Fes and first days in Morocco wouldn’t have been the same without Abdoul. He received us very late at night, and called a restaurant to prepare food for us as everything was already closed at that time.
He helped us to find many places at the Medina.
The Riad is nice, and don’t miss the terrace.
Actually to be honest the best experience I had in my life in Moroccow and that place I stay with Nabil he's so kind. He give us lot of information about Fes Medina also he show us best places to eat I really hope to come back again and I can recommend that place for everyone
This was our best stay in morocco, due to the kind personnel and the amazing riad design. This riad is most like a hotel stay, very professional and you don’t feel like you are intruding in someones home, like in other riads. The roofterrace is amazing
We had a great stay in the best place in Fes ever, very welcoming staff, wonderful view from the terrace, you can also have meals in it like breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner, easy location next to Bab Rcif the entre of the old medina just 50 metr.
This was the best place we stayed in Morocco so far due to its location which is in the Heart of the Medina and also the room was clean and smells good.
The breakfast was excellent and the staff managed our stay in a very professional way.
the most beautiful hotel I have been to in Morocco! authentic 17th century architecture, clean and classy, with the most gorgeous terrace and sweetest very professional staff. I really recommend to book a hammam / massage treatment too!
Charming riad perfectly located in the middle of the incomparable Fes Medina. Absolute quiet - gave us the best sleeps of our trip. Unbelievably helpful staff, eager to help you make the most of your trip. Great breakfasts.
Amazing experience. We had the opportunity to celebrate a holiday with the host's family. The terrace has a great view of Fes and the surrounding mountains. Our stay here has been our best experience in Morocco.
A great place to stay in Fes Medina. The hosts are very welcoming, helping with every detail of your stay. Food and sightseeing recommendations were great. The decoration of the hotel is superb.
Amazing riad in the heart of Fes Medina. Omar is an exceptional host, treated me the best. Rooms are nice and comfortable, breakfast is delicious and the rooftop is so nice.
