Dalston village is beautiful, but Carlisle Town, what we saw of it was uninspiring and unattractive.
Lots of road works , confusing road systems and busy. Not a bit like the other lake district towns.
Perhaps we hadn't seen the best of it to be fair.

Quite an underrated town.
Quite an underrated town. The castle and cathedral are very interesting, plenty of history to see. I like it most because you can quite easily travel to fantastic locations from all directions; Hadrian's wall & Newcastle to the East, Ribblehead & the Lake district to the South, the scenic Cumbrian coast to the West & the Historic Southern lowlands of Scotland to the North!

Convenience as a base to visit more of Cumbria.
Convenience as a base to visit more of Cumbria. If like me you don't drive its good to have a base with plenty of public transport to enable you to see a variety of places. Carlisle itself is easy to walk round, everything within walking distance.

I was only there for a quick one-night stop. The weather was so bad in the evening that I did not venture far, but I found a decent fish-and-chip shop.
Got up early in the morning and went for a walk. I did like the city centre area, and especially the historic area.
My go to place in Carlisle. I like to support local businesses rather than the chain hotels where possible. Always clean and never had any problems. Had an ensuite room which was good. Always good value. Close to city centre and on a quiet street with two pubs round the corner, but never had any external noise disturbance even with the windows open. Free WiFi in room.
Brilliant location right near the centre of Carlisle, hosts were friendly, room was perfect, lots of space comfortable bed and including homemade biscuits!
The piece de resistance is the Breakfast good selection of hot food, married with a myriad of homecooked cakes, scones and bread. Could quite easily run a café let alone a B&B!
Beautiful old hotel with masses of character. Entrance hall fabulous as are some of the public rooms. Right in the heart of Carlisle, so restaurants and shops literally on the doorstep. 1 member of staff (Darren) exceeded his role by finding a spare duvet and trying to fix window. Breakfast and early staff very good.
Very nice clean well run hotel. The hotel was in a good location with bus stops close by which was very handy for sightseeing around Carlisle. Places to eat were very close to hotel and a newsagents right opposite it for the daily paper. Nice lounges in the hotel which had its own bar. Breakfast was Excellent!
The hotel was very well situated , many good restaurants close by. The train station a very easy walk if wanting to do the Settle Carlisle journey. Parking was very convenient at the back of our appartment, which was very clean and well equipped for any self catering one would want to do.
It was my first time at this hotel and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The room with large, clean and warm with a lovely comfortable bed.
My two dogs and myself were made very welcome.
I will be delighted to stay here again the next time I'm in Carlisle
stayed at the hotel as a pit stop to Scotland, it was like a little oasis of bliss and tranquility in a manic day of traveling , room gorgeous, pond stunning, food delicious, staff very on point . all in all 10/10
The room was not dirty.
The location was convenient to getting to Carlisle centre and there was a large car park which could be used free of charge when staying at the hotel.
Hotel is in an excellent location, staff are pleasant and the room was clean warm and comfortable, breakfast was nice, no complaints from me or the wife.
