Right in the heart of Barnard Castle. The food was excellent, probably one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. Rooms and public spaces had quality furnishings and very clean. Would definitely recommend.

The Cricketers only has two rooms and we booked both as a family of 2 adults and two teenage boys as we were attending a wedding nearby. Due to the way the third party booking app worked it would only let us book two twin rooms. When the Cricketers contacted us they were very accommodating and changed the set up to a double and a twin.
The rooms were tastefully decorated, clean and cosy. The beds were comfortable. Being in the centre of Barnard Castle it is an old and characterful building, and it is right in the middle of Main Street.
The Cricketers Arms is a pub and so there was some noise until closing time at midnight. It wasn't that bad though and we had expected that this would be the case especially as we were staying on a Saturday night. But after this time the noise dropped off quickly and we had a peaceful nights sleep.
Overall we were very happy and would definitely stay again.

Favourite pub was the Blue Bell very friendly and how a pub use to be.

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Lovely small town with lots to see and do in surrounding area
Pubs are good and a great choice for eating from breakfast to evening meal
Hecklers cottage was lovely where we stayed but house keeping appalling good job plenty places to eat out
Such a shame !!
We would love to stay again
The Owners Roy & Rima are such an amazing couple, they really made us feel special even though we were only booked for 1 night. The bedroom (en suite) was enormous, very quaint as you would expect from a 12th Century building (the beer garden wall is part of the old Castle!) but with all the modern amenities we needed! The food is outstanding & the beer & ale choices are plentiful. Wish we could have stayed another night or 2, there's a lot to do & see in this area. We will definitely be back but for longer next time!
Carole made us so welcome and her attention to detail is flawless. Our room was beautiful and comfortable and our breakfast each morning was delicious.
Again, Carole was so attentive to our needs, whether it be activities to pursue or places to dine in Barnard Castle and beyond.
I have nothing but praise for Newgate House with a promise to return.
All out love.

A splendid old hotel building with up-to-date food and facilities. The location is amazing, just by the A66 and so easily accessible, but it feels like the middle of the country, with walks along the river Greta, beside which lies the evocative ruin of Brignall Old Church. Great for Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, and Penrith, among other places.
The staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and accommodating. They were not yet open for meals for the season yet but were still able to serve us a drink when we arrived. After trekking all day, this was a great treat. The room was clean and comfortable. The town is small and cute.
the location was excellent right in the centre of town amid all the shops and bars with easy access to the castle and river The property was well equipped clean and comfortable. The host communicated well and left some breakfast staples which were very welcome Very enjoyable stay.
Fantastic location - made a great base for exploring Bowes/Barnard Castle/Richmond/etc. The room couldn't have been any cleaner & was really comfortable. The hotel is amazingly well run by a 2-person team. The dinner menu has lots of choice, including a full separate veggie menu.
Even though the place is on the main thoroughfare, the room was quiet and clean with water and coffee making facilities, which was ideal after a walk around the market place. The bed was comfortable and the shower facility was perfect after a good wander around Barnard Castle.
This is a really exceptional relaxing and well appointed hotel. Lovely helpful staff, well organised for Covid restrictions. Great light room with four poster, superb dinner and breakfast. Great bar and extensive outside space and stylish furnishings. I had a wonderful stay.
We loved our stay here! the cottage was spotlessly clean and so comfortable with the BEST shower! There was a generous welcome hamper which made our stay extra special. There is lots to do in the local area and the host was really friendly and welcoming.
The cottage was lovely, spacious and very clean. It was also in a great position overlooking the river and also a short stroll from the main street in Barnard Castle. Overall, it was a beautiful, welcoming property and we highly recommend it.
Situated at Brignell a short country drive from Barnard Castle, through pasture Yorkshire.

Lovely little place with everything you need. Fantastic location right in heart of Barnard Castle, yet still quiet and tucked away. Very clean, comfortable and well decorated.
The staff all seemed happy to be working there, the breakfast was good, the bed and pillows comfortable and it was just a short walk into the centre of Barnard Castle.
