Mountain Paradise in Salzburg Province
A paradise in the Austrian state of Salzburg, Zell am See is located along the shores of the Zell Lake and surrounded by mountains like the 2000-metre high Schmittenhöhe. It is an important ski centre in the winter and a hiking and mountain-biking paradise during summer.
The area has been occupied since Roman times, but the village was founded around the year 740 by the order of Bishop Johannes I of Salzburg. The picturesque Old Town includes typical Alpine style buildings, as well as the oldest building of the region, St. Hippolyte's Church. The Austrian area of Zell am See offers a wide range of hotels, B&B’s, apartments, and guest houses.
The leisure centre has a covered pool, a sauna and steam bath, and special facilities for kids. Zell am See is a gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park, the biggest of the Alps and Austria’s oldest.
The nearby town of Kaprun is home to the 12th-century Kaprun Castle and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Salzburg Airport is 100 km away, while Sixt Innsbruck Airport is 150 km away. Zell am See is a town on the route of the Transalpin train.
Zell am See is a town on the route of the Transalpin train. We stayed for one night before our journey across the alps to Zurich. If you don't ski, there is little to do in town when it's cold outside besides a stroll along the beautiful lake and a visit to shops and restaurants. One 24-hour period was enough for us to see and do everything. The location of the train station made this a very easy place to visit.

Zell am See didn't have the quaint alps village feel at all, more like a regular large town, the high street was very disappointing.
The scenery of the lake and mountains was breath taking. Simply beautiful.
Snow for skiing in Feb 24 was absolutely awful given the low altitude! A lot of mud patches on the lower runs rendering them unusable. I would consider elsewhere for skiing option tbh. The ski resort was small and good for beginners/families primarily.
I felt very safe walking around the town.

We loved Zell am See.
We loved Zell am See. From the ease of getting here (the train from Salzburg is clean, quick and on time), to the scenery, beautiful town and great people. Everyone was pleasant to deal with, the facilities are excellent (although watch out for the supermarkets closing early compared to the UK) and the skiing is brilliant. Lift queues were generally short. However, as expected, everything is expensive!

What I like the most: Friendly staff, free use of washing machine and dryer at the lobby, underground garage, spacious living room and fully equipped kitchen, near the lake for a leisure walk and near to town and near to a lot of ski lifts and cable car to Schmittenhöhe
What I don like: nothing. Just be sure not to have a late check in so that you can seek for help before the reception close

Zell am See is truly beautiful.
Zell am See is truly beautiful. We had an amazing week of skiing with an excellent ski guide (Thomas Hager, https://www.alpin-guide.com/eng/), who added so much to our ski holiday experience. The town of Zell am See has an array of great restaurants, bars and shops. We travelled over the Christmas period and the place was festive with lots of Christmas spirit in the air! We would highly recommend a trip to Zell am See.

Zell am See is a proper small town with a lovely pedestrian zone and not just a ski resort. It is located on one side of a beautiful lake, surrounded by mountains. There's a good choice of places to eat and drink and I particularly like the Gin House and Steinerwirt. I get the sense it's quite a good place for a mixed group of those who ski/snowboard and those who don't, but it's particularly good for skiers as there are several lift options from and around the town, so wherever you stay you'll probably be close to one of the base lifts. Accommodation on the hill just above the town will have great views and, provided you leave your equipment at a base station or have a car, the walk is quite pleasant.
Spotless clean historical hotel right in the center of Zell am see. Despite being dated the room's decor has his own charme.
A cozy vintage wellness is available in the afternoon with a sauna at no extra cost.
The receptionists are amazing and always kind and helpful.
The atmosphere is nice. Staff often smiles at you. Considered the long stay and the loyalty as a returning customer I was granted a particulary cozy room with a nice view.
Considered Zell am see exorbitant prices the rate is good, but not cheap.
A sweet, cozy quiet apartment, not new (apart from the bathrooms which were recently renovated) but everything was in good shape and very clean. Beautiful big garden with a large lawn, flowers well taken care of, a trampoline and toys which the kids loved. 5 minute walk from a beautiful beach on the lake. 3 min. walk to grocery store which opened 7am was great. Supermarkets and restaurants nearby. Zell Am See is a great destination and this is a good spot to tour it from.
This is an absolutely amazing hotel. The staff here are some of the most attentive, kind hotel owners I've ever come across. We stayed here during the Zell Am See Ironman, and the hotel had thought of everything. They were welcoming, personable and attended to our every need and then some. Each night they had a home cooked menu available, they have their family dog walking around, and the location could not be more perfect. I will go back here in a heartbeat.
We had an excellent time at this hotel. Super clean, right in the centre of Zell am See. They provide bathrobes and slippers. Breakfast was really good. They can also cook a la carte omlettes with different fillings and fried eggs. There is a rooftop bar with amazing views over the lake and the surrounding mountains. Would definitely book again. We chose to stay here because we drove on Grossglockner road the next day.
One of the best Hotels in Zell am See. The Spa facilities are outstanding. I am not sure that any other hotel in Zell am See even closely has something similar for the price. During our stay we have also visited two other popular hotels - Hotel Gruner Baum and Grand Hotel. Both of them cannot even remotely compare to Haidvogl. Additionally one has to mention the exceptionally friendly staff. And it is very clean.
I love the view of the room and have really enjoyed the stay to the max. Suits size are very big and comfortable. You can walk to the down town or you may use the parking public parking near down down Zell am see. Also they have given us a sell am see card which was really helpful with the map. So most of the activity were free to ride.
The staff is friendly and available to help with eventual requests. It's in a very good location in a walkable distance from the mountain and city center. The highlight was the unexpected Summer Card provided by the hotel that made all the difference, we could save more than 200€ in tickets for the attractions in Zell am see and Kaprun.
The location is very nice and directly on the lake Zell am See from the other side. The view is breathtaking and it is only 7 minutes drive from the city center. The staff is very wonderful and helpful, the apartment is spacious and has a beautiful balcony, the apartments have an elevator and free parking with a smart entry gate
best place in town. Very cozy hotel with a great atmosphere. The host couple were incredibly friendly, helpful and welcoming. The hotel is well centrally located right close to the center and right next to the ski lift. When we return to Zell am See, we will definitely choose this hotel. From Pia and Knud - Denmark
Lovely near new hotel, near ski slope & grocery stores. Staff were very helpful in helping us with contacting airline Lufthansa after they lost our luggage and airline staff only answered telephone in German/Austrian. We would like to especially thank Manager Harald and Montena for all their help.
The house is in a fantastic location, close to the shops, restaurants and ski slopes.
The house is well laid out with lots of space. It was warm, well equipped and the owners were friendly and welcoming.
We will be rebooking it for next year.
Great location to discover Zell am See. Very pleasant hotel with rooms in form of small apartments. We enjoyed having small living room and separate bedroom. Very good parking under the building including in your room rate.
The hotel is very beautiful and wonderful staff it was a great days with breakfast everything is magical, clean rooms and beautiful view to the lake, this my recommendation to zell am see visitors
Fantastic hotel, room is spacious with fabouls bathrooms. Spa and pools are amazing. They have plenty of parking space. Super close to all ski tracks - max 10 min by car.
The location of the hotel is second to none. Fab 360 views of the alps. Easy ski in ski out facility. Loved the recommended morning ride before breakfast.
