Featuring northern Germany’s best-preserved medieval centre, Lübeck justifies its UNESCO World Heritage listing. The river surrounding the old town links it to the historically important trade route of the Baltic Sea. For this reason it was capital of the Hanseatic League of merchant guilds for over 500 years.
Warehouses from that time still line the waterfront and are now shops, restaurants and bars. Their step gables, and the Gothic spires that dominate them, are best viewed from boat trips around the island. The tallest spires belong to 14th-century St Mary’s Church, similar in style to the cathedral of the same era.
However, Lübeck’s icon is the Holstentor, the most impressive remaining city gate which sits on a separate island by a park. This is the first thing most visitors see after arriving at the train station from Lübeck Airport.
The road through the gate leads to a cobbled square housing the porticoed town hall and part of the annual Christmas markets. Other stalls are in Koberg square, overlooked by Saint Jakobi Church and the medieval Holy Spirit Hospital. Nearby are shops selling the famous Niederegger marzipan founded here, and the former houses of Willy Brandt, Günter Grass and Thomas Mann.
The Lübeck accommodation on Booking.com includes hotels, apartments and guest houses, most with parking.

Lubeck seems to have miraculously survived world war 2 having plenty of very interesting buildings to look at. I found it very pleasant for a stroll around especially in the evening. There are plenty of high class clothing shops there and the eating opportunities look good. It is only a short bus or train ride to Travemunde which seems to be a magnet for locals and tourists.

Loved the vibe in Lubeck - plenty to see and do. People seemed friendly and I just wish we could have stayed longer. We travelled to a few cities in this part of Germany over the course of the week, finishing in Hamburg, and Lubeck is the one I always look back on fondly.

The architecture in Lübeck centre is predominantly medieval and coupled with the wide river flowing through it gives a wonderful atmosphere. There are two museums and the church of St. Mary is well worth a visit. Shopping is well catered for and the cafés are excellent, the Weiner Caféhaus in particular. We were slightly wrong-footed by the fact that most shops are closed on Sunday and the cafés don’t open until 11am so breakfast should be taken in the hotel on that day.

We visited Lübeck the week before Christmas to enjoy their Christmas markets. We were not disappointed! Everything was in walking distance. We were there over the weekend, and there was still a lot going on. We enjoyed the café and eateries, as well as all the sites, sounds, smells and tastes of the Christmas markets. (We recommend the Backstore Cafe for delicious breakfasts!) You'll have to sample some marzipan while in Lübeck. It is made there. You can buy marzipan in any supermarket, but you won’t want to miss the delicious cakes at the Niederegger Cafe. There is a small free museum on the top floor of the Niederegger Cafe. Be sure to visit it. The view of the market from there was also beautiful. The people of Lübeck were very friendly. Lübeck is a hidden gem in Northern Germany. Definitely worth checking out.
We arrived to Lubeck by ship reasonably late in the evening, and were looking for a hotel that was within a reasonable drive from the Travemunde port, is dog friendly, and to which one can check in late. This hotel checked in all the boxes, and as a bonus it was very accessible by car.
The rooms were big, clean, and comfortable. The breakfast was OK, and the price-quality ratio just excellent. So for an overnight stay that we were looking for before heading out of Lubeck, hotel Gutenberger worked out really well.
We have been visiting Lübecker Weihnchtsmarkt every third year since 1997, and every time we stay at this hotel (and Mövenpick as it was earlier). It’s a perfect location if you are exploring the city center of Lübeck, and the hotel itself is very good. The rooms (superior) are big enough and very comfortable. The breakfast was famous when the hotel was a Mövenpick hotel, it has been “modernized” but it still is very good.
Beautifully renovated building on a convenient location in Lübeck, closeby the city center and with parking closeby. Comfortable bed and bathroom, beautifully furnished and decorated. Lots of little details, flowers, carafe of port wine offered in the room, ... Staff was very kind and helpful. Everything was perfect. Breakfast is a little expensive but very much worth it, it's not your regular hotel breakfast!
Some noise from the street (beside busstation) from time to time. But when we closed the window, not much to hear.
But it was some hot days, so we would like to have the window open at night.
There were aircondition, but not so easy to find out. And if full speed that made some noise.
But overall it is a nice hotel, nice breakfast buffet, nice staff, rather close to altstadt.
This house is amazing! It was clean and very well-maintained, with a warm and cozy atmosphere even in colder months. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, the fridge is big, it is offering a feeling of home. The Internet is fast and all the furniture and equipment are well-maintained and work perfectly. I definitely recommend this house to anyone visiting the area of Lubeck.
The location of this hotel is excellent. We are regular visitors to Lubeck and know the town. We always travel by car from SE Sweden, and the pay as you go car park is 25 metres from the hotel and very reasonably priced at 12 euro per day. Beware though as the exit from the hotel can confuse owners who wish to return and park outside the hotel to load up luggage.
Bright clean room with a spacious bathroom. Nice balcony. Close to the train and bus stations but, with a room at the back of the hotel, it was a peaceful location - mostly all I could hear was birdsong and the occasional siren. It was a short (10 minute) flat walk into Lübeck. Excellent dinner in the Buddha Bowl.
Comfortable hotel with great restaurant, easy access to Lubeck town center. I have stayed here three times and the property is consistently well run. Its close to the train station so you can walk if you are not carrying lots of luggage.
Great location, a hotel with charm that combines perfectly with the location at the heart of old Lübeck.
The service was top, always pleasant and with a smile.
great breakfast in an amazing room, best way to start a day.
The room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was really good. The hostess was very friendly. A bonus was the busstop across from the hotel, so we could go into town by bus and did not have to worry about parking the car.
Quaint hotel with a lovely owner. Very nice European style breakfast served up until 10 am. Just over a mile from Lubecks picturesque attractions and shopping along an easy to follow route. staying here again in July
The rooms were clean and large enough. The bathroom was large and bright with good amenities. The hotel is just a 10 mins walk from the heat of Lübeck. The breakfast was quite good and the staff was very friendly.
The hotel is in a perfect location for an evening out in Lübeck. It is just a few steps to one of two bridges into the old town. At the same time, the hotel itself has excellent facilities and a great breakfast.
Engineering renovation works were a wonder.
The city of Lubeck is lovely.
Tip: Park at the Park Haus Am Burgtor covered lot, which is less expensive and more secure than the open-air junkyard lot of the hotel.
Very nice hotel in the heart of Lübeck. Nice breakfast in an extremely cozy ambient. The same can be said about the evening with personalized bar service. Friendly personell in general. Good value for money.
