Formerly the Blackball Hilton, hotel in Blackball

Set in Blackball, 24 km from Greymouth Railway Station, Formerly the Blackball Hilton offers accommodation with a garden, free private parking, a shared lounge and a terrace.

This was a quirky place, full of history from the old mining days. Bathroom and toilets were in the hall but everything was spotlessly clean. Rooms are very simple and there is a big basket with hot water bottles in case you get cold. We very much enjoyed our food: it was delicious, affordable and they serve a good portion size. The pub was downstairs so you will hear some music when you are in bed but it was not too loud or annoying for us at all. Comfortable beds and a good basic breakfast included & friendly staff, the only thing we regret is that we didn't have more time to absorb everything we saw in the pub: from old signs with West Coast sayings, newspaper articles, old mining memorabilia and so much more. We LOVED the whole atmosphere: if you expect the luxury of a 5-star-hotel then it is probably not for you but if you are keen to go to a place that is unique, different and something to remember for a long time we would highly recommend it.

Blackball Tinyhouses, hotel in Blackball

Situated in Blackball, 24 km from Greymouth Railway Station, Blackball Tinyhouses features accommodation with a garden and free private parking. Free WiFi is provided.

This tiny house is actually a trailer with a tiny house on top. Basic but functional set-up with a bed, a kitchenette, a sofa and at the end, separated via a sliding door, a bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. Thankfully there was a - as it turned out - splendidly working Dyson heater/cooler as it was a very cold evening and other than that there is no heating and even the extra blanket that was being provided would not have been enough to keep us warm. In the kitchenette there was a toaster, electric kettle, fridge (with a salami sample for free!) and some dishes and cutlery. Also, tea and coffee, sugar, jam and butter, milk in the fridge. Spotless clean. Self check-in and -out via key box and code, no issues whatsoever. Communications with hosts was what I would call minimalistic (communicated the basics that was it) - usually more information about e.g. the accommodation, the village, etc. is being provided but as we were just passing through that was fine for us.

A perfect spot to stay before starting the Paparoa Track.

A perfect spot to stay before starting the Paparoa Track. Staff were helpful, meals were lovely and the shared bathrooms were spotless! Single duvets tended to slip off bed as not enough tuck-in and only one reading light but beds were comfy, location was quiet so very satisfied with the room.

    Very friendly and helpful staff.

Very friendly and helpful staff. We had dinner there which was super tasty. Excellent breakfast included in the price and a bonus if you are heading off to do the Paparoa Track as we were. Blackball itself is a cute wee town and worth a visit in itself.
