Italy’s Answer to Vienna
Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.
But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.
The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.
Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.
Booking.com’s Trieste accommodation includes hotels with pools, cheap apartments by the station and B&Bs near Ronchi dei Legionari Airport.
Great city to visit!
Due to its geographical location, it is relatively close to Ljubljana in Slovenia, Udine, Venice etc. etc.
I could visit Ljubljana and Venice as well this time from Trieste.
Its old town, harbour, main square (Piazza Unità d'Italia) is amazing. Loved just rambling around in the city.
Since it is build on a hill(mountain)side (the Karst), when entering the city by bus, we were descending in some serpentine roads. It provided an amazing view on the city and the harbour.
You could also read the book 'Trieste and the meaning of nowhere' by Jan Morris.
Also, James Joyce seems to have liked the city, too.
Trieste has a very interesting and rich history.

Trieste is an amazing place Italian and yet not.
Trieste is an amazing place Italian and yet not. A mix of cultures. Lovely to walk about and enjoy the city. Visit old cafes where James Joyce and his literary friends gathered. So much history. The food is delicious and some of the best white wines to be had anywhere in the world. I could go on but I’ll end by saying Trieste is not to be missed .

Trieste is a very compact city.
Trieste is a very compact city. The main square and restaurants are all close together. There is a wide variety of eating places that all seemed to be reasonably priced.
The harbour side sea font is pretty and it is well worth taking a ferry trip to Muggia (30 minutes)
Mirimar Castle is also well worth a trip 25 minutes on the NO.6 bus from outside the train station.

Trieste exceeded our expectations.
Trieste exceeded our expectations. I’m not really sure what we expected as we didn’t really know that much about it before our visit. We just stopped there en route to Venice after walking in Slovenia for a week as Trieste was the closest Italian city on the coast.
The history of Trieste is tremendous and the palaces and pedestrian areas are so amazing. Huge piazzas and little narrow lane ways winding around up towards the castle and church on the hill.
There are so many little bars and restaurants everywhere, all of them serving up great Italian food. We wanted to visit all of them but of course could only go to a few. Can’t even remember their names, we just wandered and walked into ones that we liked the look of.
We also loved the Italian ‘vibe’. After a week in Slovenia it was very noticeably ‘different’, less formal somehow, the coffee quality went through the roof, although, Slovenia is probably the most scenic country we have ever been to.
Would thoroughly recommend a stop over in Trieste to anyone.

When coming to Trieste, you shouldn't miss a stroll to Barcola in the summer a really lovely place to share an afternoon with friends having a swim in trasparent and green sea water.
Trieste offers a wide range of typical food but also international options; in the morning do not miss Via XX Settembre with its characteristic small cafeteria and bars with tasty street food.
At night you can enjoy a drink outside the lively pubs even in winter!
If you like caves, there is the Grotta Gigante, not far from town where you can experiment a journey in one of the tallest European Grotto.
Finally, there are also many hystorical and literary short trips you can book or arrange by yourself downtown or in the not too distant Slovenia.

Trieste is fantastic, very walkable, stunning architecture,...
Trieste is fantastic, very walkable, stunning architecture, good shopping, and plenty of excellent places to wine and dine. Public transport is very accessible for anyone wanting a day trip, perhaps if the weather is not cooperating, and it's very easy to hop on the train to visit Venice for a few hours, or to take a bus trip to Slovenia for the day. Trieste is very high on my list of places to return to as often as possible.
Smart rooms is perfectly located in the center of Trieste. The staff was always available and helped us when we needed information and to store our luggage the day of checkout. During summer they provide a nice basic breakfast which helps start the day with the right foot. We had a room with shared bathroom and there was always an available bathroom when we needed it. The bathroom is big and comfortable. The room had a desk and the wifi speed was remarkably fast - a rarity on budget hotels.
The hotel is located right by the beach, very well located! Beautiful, spacious rooms overlooking the sea, that was just magical! The hotel and its surroundings are truly beautiful! The staff was very attentive and helpful! Breakfast was an experience of its own! Tommy made sure we had a fairytale breakfast with a beautifully decorated buffet and amazing specialties! It is nice to visit any time of the year! We will definitely visit again!
This hotel is great. Since we were travelling by bicycles, we decided to make a break in Trieste and indeed this was a wonderful idea. We were really impressed with the hotel as it had a dedicate storage space where we were able to leave our bikes over night. The location of the hotel was very nice, it was in the city centre. The room was very nice too. The breakfast was lovely too. The staff were fantastic too.
Very nice hotel at the beach front. Walking distance from the Miramare castle. We got upgraded for the room with balcony that was nice. Although we thought it’s not worthy in late November, turned out that you can still catch some nice weather. The room is big enough to arrange luggage and move around. Pretty big bathroom. I feel good we decided not to stay in Trieste city center and chose this hotel.
First of all, he is the best host ever!! We saved money because he helped us with parking, where to eat, how to go on excursions! The best location in Trieste, right in the center and in a quiet street, real Italy! The apartment has everything you need, clean and comfortable.
The next time I visit Trieste, I will go straight to this apartment! Everything was wonderful and beyond expectations!
Host met us outside and helped us in.Fruendly .
Trieste is a difficult city to navigate on foot, but the location helped a lot.
Facilities were as expected...a bit sparse, but the snacks and drinks left for us were welcome. Laundry was a plus, and the reason we booked the apartment.
The host contacted us after we left to help us find a wallet that we had lost.in Pisa. VERY KIND.

The room was great and the location was very central. The place is small overall, but the room doesn't feel too small and the bathroom was big enough. There is no common space or lobby, though it is a hotel. I would say it's a boutique hotel and it has only one small elevator that can fit 2 people at a time.
Apartment was clean, spacious and tidy. Great location. Staff was great… courteous and accommodating. Beds are very comfortable. Everything was complete and good quality. Very happy with rental. Very quiet. Easy check in and check out. Loved being in beautiful Trieste at Diana’s House.
The hotel is centrally located, a few minutes from the sights and the port. There are many restaurants and shops around. I asked for a room with a view and I never imagined that such a view could be possible. The view was over the rooftops of Trieste and the bay. Thanks!
What a cool a place. A joy of a revamped boutique hotel. Immaculately designed, really comfortable, sweet glass shower, espresso machine in the room... an experience, and affordable, very likely the best place in Trieste in that regard.
The rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was located a short walk to the port and was surrounded by restaurants. I highly recommend Elisabeth Boutique Rooms.
Location was perfect and the room was comfortable, spacious, nicely decorated and clean.
Hotel staff was very attentive and helpful to our needs. Definitely to-go place if visiting Trieste.
Breakfast was exceptional, one of the best I had in Italy ever (especially for 3* accommodation). The room is clean and spacious, the staff is friendly and the location couldn't be better.
Comfortable and well-furnished aparment in a good location close to the city center of Triest. Well equiped kitchen, two TVs, spacious bedroom, clean bathroom. The owner is very friendly.
Location of hotel is fine, but don’t expect any luxury. Rooms were okay, but nothing special. Price is low though, so if you care about that the most, this is a nice place to stay.
The location was perfect. The history of the site was interesting. Breakfast was amazing! Our room (501) was spacious and comfortable! Hotel staff are awesome!!
