After living in Waiouru for five years in 1970s and 1980s, always wanted to spend night in Taihape at the Gretna. Had room 34 which offered ensuite, large comfortable double bed, with large table and chairs. Clean and comfortable and well away from any noise from the bar and public facilities downstairs. Dining room had specials each night, we had burger of choice with tap beer of choice for $20. Large plates with superb homemade Pattie, beetroot, tomato, gherkin, fresh lettuce and tomato on supersize bun with hand cut homemade chips. Amazing value. No breakfast, but kitchen facilities on accommodation floor provides teabags and coffee with all facilities. Great value

Jolanda was very hospitable and helpful. The accommodation was very comfortable and was separate from the main house. The bathroom was a good size and reached by going through the 'snug'; a seating area with a sofa and TV. The main room had the kitchenette, table & chairs & bed with access to a balcony overlooking the garden & hills behind with table & chairs for al fresco dining! Although on the main SH 1, it was a haven of peace when we stayed!

A great selection of herbal teas, coffee, hot chocolate etc. Freshly baked delicious blueberry muffins and chocolate on our arrival. Exceptionally clean. Lovely surroundings peaceful and quiet. This is a historic gem. Beautifully restored with period features intact. It was peaceful and the dawn chorus of the magpies was beautiful.
I recommend the books about the history of the family and the property.
The bathroom with a big deep enamel bath was bliss.

Taihape is a quaint quiet country town.
Taihape is a quaint quiet country town. The locals are a friendly lot and like to have a chat. I didn’t venture out much during my 2 days there but when I did,it was relatively easier to find my way around. The only disappointment I had was there was only one takeaways open in the afternoon/evening.(Chinese),fortunately New Worlds is handy.

A lovely little old town which we usually transit at on our way down south. The little town has all sorts of amenities including good supermarket and a few good cafes with at least two very good restaurants as well. There are a number of motels within the town and situated along the main highway. There are two large petrol stations, including one large BP petrol station. We believe that Taihape may also be a stop for the main-line Auckland to Wellington Railway... there is certainly quite a large railway station at the top of the town.

Great location if your seeking a quiet getaway from the busy city life, I would highly recommend going to dine at the rustic steak house just a one minute walk from aspen manner accomodation, they had amazing food and service, I look forward to returning in the future just to get to eat more of there high quality meat and mealsMorganNew Zealand - 8.0Scored 8.0

Taihape is a lovely place to take family and participate in the gumboot throwing and picnics in the park. Swimming in Rangitikei river is amazing your family will love it too. It has everything you need like New World, Mobil gas station and a Mac Donalds for the grand children. The ranges and the landscape is deep and rich with so much history.

Nice crockery. Good table and chairs and outdoor seating. The area was peaceful and easy to drive to the property and park vehicle. A short distance from Taihape township with sheep and cattle nearby. No stairs to climb. Real NZ countryside. Owner was friendly and helpful. Nicely decorated inside and spacious bathroom, well presented.

We have always found the motel friendly and operated by helpful staff. Close to town. We were very pleased to see that the great old 'Gumboot Manor Restaurant' which had closed some time ago, has found new ownership and re-opened as a great looking restaurant under a new name. It is only a couple of minutes walk from the Coachman

The staff are all very friendly and helpful, the bed is comfortable, the sheets crisp, the towels thick and the shower hot. The hotel is old and probably in need of refurbishment but it is priced accordingly. We ate in the restaurant and they were very accommodating of my specific dietary requirements. Will stay again.
