    Typical country town.

Typical country town. There was a great coffee shop, vehicle srervicing and farm supply facilities. We enjoyed our stay there as a staging post for WOMAD in New Plymouth. The view from the Barbwire Bach across the lake is tranquil and very scenic.

Nice quiet restful relaxing place to stay as long as you don't expect a bustling shopping area. It is back to basics and take time to "chill out". Best places were the walking tracks around and about the area. Lovely coffee shop and cafe in town. Takeaways were fine, Four square shops useful, very easy place to get around as very little traffic and trip round the coast further is a relaxing and enjoyable trip.

Opunake is a small town, the way small towns would have been many decades ago - that is what makes it appealing. No big brands or shopping centres, just old fashioned 4 Square, dairy, fish n chip shop, a couple of cafe's and some second hand/antique shops. It has it's own lake and beach and an extensive walking and biking trail that snakes it's way around the clifftops and round the town. You can even ride your bikes around the streets as it is so quiet, hardly any traffic or fast moving vehicles. It is a unique and special place on the suf highway 45 worth stopping and exploring.

Nice golf course and sheep were great company.

Nice golf course and sheep were great company. Being a small town not many restaurants but well catered for with takeaway bars of good standard. Nice relaxing place to stay although i presume it would be much more hectic in summer.

Lived there in the 80s..place has gone down hill due to the closure of the dairy factory..main street so untidy..needs a spruce up..shops look neglected...the South Taranaki Council should accept some of the blame they have neglected the area. There were 30 of us ..reserved seating at a cafe ..the only one there. My wife and I arrived early before anybody else and we place our order at 9.50am..The others arrived about 10.15am.My wife and I did not receive our order until 11.10am.If it was not already paid we would have left.75% of the others who arrived late were served before us. My wife only ordered a piece of Quiche from the cabinet. Also charging 15% extra becos of Public Holiday not on. Would not return to this place The Bar meals at the Club hotel were great you can eat these in the dining room The staff are great esp the Lady behind the bar

Opunake is such a warm and friendly old Kiwi town!!

Opunake is such a warm and friendly old Kiwi town!! Real genuine locals that helped make our stay so worthwhile!! It is rather breathtaking to walk around with Mt Taranaki on one side and the ocean’s crashing waves on the other!! The community involvement is evident with the beautiful manicured colourful gardens, clean wide streets and lack of graffiti. The Opunake hotel has a great restaurant which serves up delicious food and you are served by very friendly staff. An absolute top of the list breakfast place we enjoyed each morning was the Smart Tart Cafe ( i hope I have named that correctly)next to the Club Hotel. The food is simply delicious and the family that runs it were delightful. The Gardens that entered in the Taranaki Fringe Festival were a joy to visit.
