Russell is heavenly. It is so beautiful and we had the best time.
What a gem this part of the world has access to! The oysters were amazing. The food/experience and service at the Duke of Marlborough was first rate. The sunsets were surreal. The visit to Urupakapuka by ferry led to an amazing day of exercise and adventure, we had a heavenly swim in one of the islands isolated beaches by ourselves.
What a day!🥰

If you are around Bay of islands I suggest to not stay at Paihai and go to Russell. Smaller, quieter and much nicer. There is a ferry across to Paihai if you want to go there.
Long Beach is not to be missed and we enjoyed the Flagstaff walk too.

Nice & quiet in the middle of winter.Gets very busy at summertime so booking ahead is essential. Always good food at The Duke restaurant & great front rooms with a balcony with sea views & a view of the street, great for a couple of drinks before heading to the bar!

Russell was so cool.
Russell was so cool. Easy to get around and so lovely in Winter as very few people. The history is interesting and the people were mostly friendly.
Next time we will stay 3 nights as we really relaxed and book a trip to Sage restaurant for a special treat.

It is a beautiful location and peaceful.
It is a beautiful location and peaceful. There are enough cafe's / restaurants for 4 or 5 days but plenty more in nearby resorts. The one thing you need to realise about NZ is that "eateries" general cafe's and take aways open early 6 or 7 am but close early too, 3 or 4pm. In general the stop serving an hour before. A lot of restaurants open 12 to 3pm and 5 to 8pm. If you want to eat late you need to check on line for places. Very few apart from Asian places take orders after 9pm.
Good supermarket. Lovely sea and beaches around. Public loos are quite prolific in NZ including beaches with changing rooms. The whole country top to bottom is wort a visit. Low traffic levels apart from cities. Lot of mountain roads.

We have been before 3 years ago. Love the quiet spot.
We have been before 3 years ago. Love the quiet spot. Great restaurants, friendly people. Will visit again. Found out about movie showing at night in the Town Hall. That was fun and good to meet locals.
Great location right on Russell waterfront. There are picnic tables reserved for Lodge residents just above the beach with a fabulous view. We enjoyed eating a picnic dinner out there one evening. Simply fabulous.
While there is a pool we didn't use it as the Lodge is only a few steps away from the beach and preferred to swim in the sea. We did warm up in the spa pool after one swim which was very nice.
Well appointed kitchen to do breakfast, lunch and simple dinners.
The hostess was very helpful with all our requests.
The location is superb, overlooking a rugged little beach and out to the bay of islands. The house is spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean and attractively decorated with some extra touches of luxury like the coffee machine and the sauna. There's a swimming beach a few minutes walk away and all the charms of Russell are just a few minutes drive. From our excellent queen bed, we could hear the waves breaking and the birds calling... magical. Our host was very kind and communicated extremely well.
Our hosts, Peter and Greg made our stay a memorable one. The lodge is a two storey beautiful character home with wonderful views of a harbour. It’s a short easy walk into Russell. The breakfast provided was gourmet and plentiful, beautifully cooked by Peter and presented by Greg. They offered helpful information about the area including great eating out options and excursions. Highly recommend this for your stay in beautiful Russell.
One of the most beautiful Hotels I've ever seen. Old world charm in the 21st. century. beautifully furnished with antique and modern furniture, right on the beach, full of historic photo's and information. Our dining experience was out of this world, perfectly presented, super fresh seafood and wonderful wait staff.
This property was immaculately clean and the staff were super kind and helpful. You can tell they take a lot of pride in this place. I felt very comfortable here and had a good chance to rest and catch my breath with such peaceful surroundings. If ever in Russell again, will definitely be back. Cheers.
Fantastic stay! The room is Comfortable in every way. The bed was among the best we've had in 115 days of travel. The view is such a treat. And the town of Russell is exceptional. We were sorry to only have one night. Would have preferred to stay longer rather than be passing through.
We loved the stunning view of Russell, and all the way over to Paihia from our deck. Could even be viewed from the very comfy bed.
Exceptionally clean bathroom and kitchen facilities and just the right amount of decor without the clutter.
This apartment was lovely, with a terrace and a fantastic view. Unfortunately, I couldn't really enjoy it as I stayed only for two nights because of an event in Russell. The Owner was very friendly, and I felt very comfortable there.
Absolutely loved staying a Villa Russell. Beautiful views and perfect location. Clean, comfortable and inviting. I loved the dressing gowns.
The yummy breakfast was a great end to our stay.
