We loved being so close to a beautiful bay reknowned for being a sea lion hangout. Great walk from Surat Bay to Cannibal Bay and saw lots of sea lions. We loved being able to hear the sea when we were lying in bed. The wifi was brilliant. Jane was an excellent host and left us a big range of breakfast foods and gave us fresh tomatoes from her garden. The cabin was really well equipped with kitchen equipment and was very homely . we didn’t need them but there were plenty of heaters for when it’s chilly, also electric blankets. We didn’t eat out but Jane gave us lots of recommendations.

The accommodation is perfect, clean and very comfortable surrounded by a very lovely garden. Our host Jane is friendly, kind and caring. The situation of the accommodation is in a very tranquil area about 3/5 min walk to the bay and a long beach walk with lots of wildlife. I found it very easy to get to other parts of The Catlins along the coast from here.

Norm & Thelma were excellent hosts.

Norm & Thelma were excellent hosts. Thelma provided cooked breakfasts & catered for my restricted diet & allergies. They are both talented artists. Their long time neighbour happened to be a relative of mine & we met up for lunch in Timberjacks, a very good Owaka Cafe. The sight seeing is remarkable in the Catlins, but you need a car, & be prepared to walk. Take care on the beaches and give the Sea Lions a wide berth. They can move at 25 to 30km/hr so you wont outrun them! If you come in winter the weather will be very cold.

Location was brilliant and a fantastic base to cycle or walk around a beautiful coastal area. The accommodation was fine for a short stay but is a bit dated. The shower pressure is not very good and the heating is a single portable heater which would not be very effective if it was cold. Overall a reasonable base to explore an amazing part of the country but definitely not luxurious.

New Haven was quiet and pretty with rustic holiday homes...

New Haven was quiet and pretty with rustic holiday homes set between the sea and rich farmland. The Lumberjack cafe in Owaka was superb with a welcoming atmosphere and excellent food provided by a German chef. His wife was at front of house and so nice. During our meal, a guest at a neighbouring table came and spoke to us...he has lived in the area all his life and calls it 'his piece of paradise'. Nugget Point and Kaka Point which are not far away were the highlights of our trip. Beautiful beaches with rocks, driftwood and some pretty shells. The view from Nugget Point Lighthouse is breathtaking.
