Forest Hill Farm, hotel in Moeraki

Forest Hill Farm is set in Herbert. The property is non-smoking and is located 13 km from Moeraki Boulders.

We were travelling through Moeraki as part of a long road trip of the South Island, and this cute tiny stay appeared in the search. It's in a great location, has everything one would need, and best of all - there are two highland cows in a paddock right behind it. For some reason these became my favourite things on the NZ trip.

Booked Moeraki to see boulders and Yellow Eyed penguins.

Booked Moeraki to see boulders and Yellow Eyed penguins. But actually peguins were at Oamaru. May need to eat dinner in Oamaru also as Moeraki only has the cafe by the boulders which closes at 7pm. (However we had brunch at the cafe and it was good.). Take Bushy Beach road from Oamaru to Yellow Eyed Penguin viewing point approximately an hour before sundown. In December the Blue Penguins arrive in Oamaru at 9pm. The people at that nesting area were very helpful.

It’s a beautiful coastal spot to visit.

It’s a beautiful coastal spot to visit. Only problem is the roads which are dreadful. U need a 4 wheel drive to get around. Fishwife cafe is amazing. Beautiful fresh blue cod and crayfish. Only problem is that it’s not always open except weekends.

Was able to get two units next to each other, helpful with our larger group. Good water pressure, spacious bedrooms, very comfortable beds and good view from upstairs balcony main bedroom. Would have liked to be notified road motel on, was closed with access to residents only. Did cause some confusion and concern on arrival, although access was possible.

Unfortunately all the eating places were closed while we were there so we had to go into Hampden. But I have been there before and highly recommend any of the food venues, and with covid, it was always a possibility.

A small seaside village with spectacular views of the ocean, Otago coastline and of course the famous Moeraki Boulders. It has the bonus of also being home to Fleur’s Place - a fabulous restaurant with 5 star cuisine.

Its so laid back and quiet.

Its so laid back and quiet. The Moeraki Tavern is in a great spot and the staff are super friendly. Our meals arrived almost as soon as we sat down. There are some nice walks and we got to see seals and penguins in their natural habitat by the lighthouse.
