FAQs about hotels in Melbourne

Buzzy Jewel of Aussie Rules

A thoroughly liveable city, Melbourne has a buzzy vibe and an Aussie sense of fun. There’s always something going on, and one of its many festivals is Moomba – Australia’s largest free arts festival. Well worth a visit are the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Aquarium, whose highlight is walking through a clear tunnel as sharks swim over your head.

The city’s most recognisable landmark is Flinders Street Station, whose yellow and green façade matches the colour of the historic Melbourne trams that still run around the world’s longest tram network. Keep an eye out for the street art as you travel.

Shopping in Melbourne is fantastic. Queen Victoria Market is the largest open-air market south of the Equator, while the La Trobe Street shopping centre has over 300 stores. For food, don’t miss Little Italy - the Carlton area.

South of the Yarra River is St Kilda, home to the best beach and Albert Park, where the F1 Australian Grand Prix is held. However, this is not the city’s only sporting heritage. It’s also the home of Aussie Rules football and the MCG, a must-see for cricket fans.

Booking.com has a range of Melbourne accommodation from hotels to hostels and motels, some near Melbourne Airport.

Public transport is convenient and comfortable.

Public transport is convenient and comfortable. With a 'Seniors" Myki travel card, trips on public transport are cheap, even if you don't live in Victoria. It saved us hiring a car in Melbourne. Plenty of choice for cafes and restaurants. We attended the International Flower and Plant Show at the Exhibition Building/Gardens - that was fantastic. Just be aware of the timing of your holiday in Melbourne - it is a very active city with lots of events - which can make accommodation more costly and less available. We had a great time there.

    Disappointing.

Disappointing. The photos online were nothing like the room we booked. I generally stay at 4 star or above rated hotels, and I would not consider this hotel to be a 4 star hotel (which is what I booked). We were only in Melbourne for two nights for a concert, and if we had been staying any longer I would have moved to another hotel.

There is a lot to do in Melbourne CBD and South Bank. You need a full week, especially if you want to go further than those CBD areas. It was just shame that the free tourist tram had been cancelled for the week we were there as that it a very easy way to navigate the CBD.

The Veriu Collingwood is in a fantastic location to explore the urban chic of Fitzroy in Melbourne. It is near tram lines to access the CBD also. Despite being an a main road our room was quiet. I really liked the layout of 2 x mini apartments with a shared entry as I was travelling with my mother, so it provided personal space but also togetherness. I love having mini kitchen's when I travel as I am a healthy eater, however the apartments are super close to excellent eateries, bakeries and coffee galore!

Our room was large and spacious with a very comfortable bed. As it was at the front of the hotel, we had a verandah overlooking Lygon Street - we really enjoyed that. The staff were very attentive to our needs. The location was perfect as it was on the main restaurant/coffee part of Lygon Street. We always choose to stay here when visiting Melbourne. Really friendly staff met us on arrival to hand over keys and explain key points. Apartment was beautifully situated where we had a view over the water (marina) and to the city. Spacious rooms with nice balcony. Location at Docklands is perfect for our purpose. On rim of CBD so not so noisy/busy. The deal with parking was great as was easily the cheapest hotel parking in the area we found, and breakfast included - great value for our budget. So close to Marvel Stadium without being in Docklands which was the reason for our stay, but also just a quick walk to Southbank or the Spencer St Outlet if you don't want to deal with the CBD (like us)! Staff were lovely too.
